Your Morning Dump… Where Doc’s a selling point

Doc pointing up

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

“I seriously considered the Celtics, a lot,’’ said Brewer, who ended up signing a two-year deal with Dallas and played in 13 regular-season games and six postseason games for the Mavericks. “And eventually I thought I was going to go to Boston. But then at the last minute we struck a nice deal with Dallas and we felt like this was the best situation for us.’’

[…] “I had known Doc for a while and I met him while I was in college,’’ said Brewer, who helped the Gators win consecutive national titles. “It was kind of tough because I talked to Doc, talked to Danny, and thought, ‘Man, it would be nice to go there and play for Doc,’ with the relationship we already had and I would have had a chance to play a little bit, coming in with the second unit. It was a tough decision, but I felt like I could come in and help this team.’’

Globe: Brewer enjoying the view

The C's missed out on Brewer and instead got Sasha Pavlovic… who barely played.  Considering the Mavs lack of use of Brewer… I'm guessing he would have been riding the pine a lot here too.

But the big thing here is the lure of Doc Rivers.  Ultimately, the money won out because Dallas could give Brewer about $7 million for three years (well, a prorated $2 million this year and another $5 million over the next two).  That's a lot more than the veteran minimum for the rest of the year.  But Doc kept the Celtics in the hunt for a potentially important player.

We might not like some of the moves Danny Ainge has made recently, but signing Doc to a 5 year deal is a slam dunk if he's going to hold this kind of an influence over free agents.  Boston can be a tough sell to some guys who want fun and sun to go along with their basketball.  It's nice to have something in Doc Rivers that other teams don't have that can lure guys here.
