Evan Turner is set to be the Boston Celtics‘ only true unrestricted free agent this summer, but the team’s limited rights, combined with his potential open-market value after two solid seasons in green, makes it seem unlikely that he’ll be back in Boston.

Turner stressed following his exit interview with the team earlier this month that there are bigger considerations than winning and suggested that coach Brad Stevens is among those hoping the team can find a way to bring him back. On Sunday, Turner hinted to Comcast SportsNet that he might even consider a bit of a discount if the two sides could find a way to extend their relationship.

“Hopefully we can figure out a way to make it work,” Turner told CSN at afundraising event for Horizons for Homeless. “It’s a lot going on with the team, with the roster, the draft picks, and things like that. … [Celtics brass and Turner] didn’t have any surefire talks about [a return], but there’s definitely admiration on both sides. I trust that [Celtics president of basketball operations] Danny [Ainge] is going to do what’s best for the organization.”

Pressed on whether he’d consider a hometown discount, Turner added, “Of course. I joke with people, this is the first time I left an exit meeting and the team wanted me back.”

I’d be shocked if Evan Turner takes a hometown discount — because you know what comes with being wanted by a team for the first time? Being wanted by lots of teams for the first time. Those teams can’t currently tell Turner how much they’d like to have him, but when they can they’ll likely do so with dollar amounts that exceed the amount the Celtics will be willing to offer.

I’m happy ET enjoyed his time in Boston, and it’s nice that his time with the Cs was mutually beneficial, but I’m sorry, ET, it’s not happening.

On page 2, welcome to lottery week!

Back here in good ol’ 2016, it’s not so much the lottery itself that has people scratching their heads. The lottery has actually been around since the 1980s, but it’s the presentation that’s gotten crazy. It’s this business of twirling ping-pong balls on live television as though it were the nightly mega-millions jackpot. It’s the notion that fans are asked to devote six months to discussing three-point range, sixth men and bench depth, and then, if their team doesn’t make the playoffs, being asked to bone up on the chances of landing the top pick.

And sometimes your team can make the playoffs and still qualify for the lottery. This is the happy state of affairs for your Boston Celtics, a young team that qualified for the postseason on the strength of gutty, inspiring basketball and then suffered a first-round blowout at the hands of the no-great-shakes Atlanta Hawks.

But not to worry: The Celtics own Brooklyn’s first-round pick, and the Nets were very bad this season. Because of this it was sort of like the old days around here, when fans could follow two baseball teams (Red Sox, Braves), the difference being that people had two basketball teams instead. They rooted for one to win and for the other to tank.

Herald – Buckley: NBA draft lottery is must-miss TV

Yes, there is plenty of unneeded pomp and circumstance surrounding the unveiling of the draft order each year, but the NBA teams up with the same sports network that gave Lebron James a half-hour to utter seven words about where he was to play basketball the following year.

I know my heart will be pounding and I’ll be glued to the TV for the full half-hour tomorrow night. The one difference between this lottery and the ’97 (granted I was 11-years-old) and ’07 lotteries is that there are plenty of things outside of this pick about which to be excited when it comes to the Cs. I don’t think I’ll feel the same level of anxiety, nor the same level of despair if the pick doesn’t fall in the top two.

Conversely, if the pick does land in the top-two, the level of excitement should be even higher than in lotteries past. A top two pick either means adding a potential future all-star to the bunch in Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram, or gives the Celtics another excellent trade chip.

If I had to give my prediction — too many years of disappointment has me predicting the fourth slot tomorrow night.

And finally, KO mulling when to have shoulder surgery

Boston Celtics big man Kelly Olynyk will need shoulder surgery at some point but hasn’t decided when to go through with it, according to CSNNE’s A. Sherrod Blakely.

Blakely reported Sunday that an “inevitable” surgery should sideline Olynyk for approximately five months. He could get it soon and be ready sometime around the end of training camp, but also has a strong desire to compete for the Canadian national team as it participates in a qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Based on Blakely’s report, it sounds like Olynyk’s other option would be resting the shoulder this summer, playing for Canada, and putting off the surgery until a later date.

Look, I’ve got nothing against Canada. My girlfriend is Canadian, I used to go there to drink in college before I turned 21, Toronto is a great city and they have ketchup flavored Lays potato chips, which are by far the best flavored potato chip I’ve ever eaten (as you can tell, most of my reasons are incredibly refined).

With that said, Kelly, get the damn surgery. Olynyk isn’t on his last legs and Team Canada isn’t exactly loaded. He’ll get another chance to play for Canada in four years. What will happen if he delays surgery is, in addition to missing much of the first half of the NBA season, he’ll get buried on a depth chart adding new talent through the draft, trade or free agency. We’ve also seen just how long it takes Olynyk to come back and feel comfortable after an injury.

I understand how much pride is involved in playing for one’s country, but c’mon, Kelly, you’re hurt and you have an obligation to the team that pays you your salary.
