Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
Is this an important summer for young guys like James Young?
Stevens: “Everybody’s got their own bullet points, four or five things. We’ve covered those at the exit meetings. If you put enough thought in to it at that time, then you can continue to focus on those throughout the course of the summer as you see those guys. But I think it’s also a time where they’ve got to get the appropriate amount of rest, like most of them have been gone for the better part of the last month. We have a couple of guys here now, but a few that aren’t and that’s fine. And then the summer league will be a big thing for [Young]. Certainly for Marcus [Smart], too, but I think for James to really gain a lot of momentum heading into next year, I think the 20 days that we’re together from practice to the last game are important.”

I talked a little bit about James Young last week, so I won’t repeat myself too much here, but I think the message is constantly being sent by the Celtics to Young that he needs to be at a certain place developmentally by the end of the summer.
Maybe he doesn’t need to exactly be in a place where he’s worked himself into a reserve role next season. Maybe the team is fine with seeing enough improvement in certain areas where they’ll let him work on them in Maine again… at least to start the year. I’m not sure. That’s between him and the team at the moment.
I know fans are itching for him to get his 20-30 minutes a game next year. I’d love to see him earn that time too. But the key for Young is to develop the proper skills without developing bad habits.
We’re still learning a lot about this kid, and his work ethic is part of that. Some guys think they’re working hard to get to where they need to be, but aren’t really matching the effort of some other guys competing for that position. One thing has been made clear time and time again… to be the absolute best, you need a maniacal dedication to the sport. That includes proper nutrition, proper rest, proper recovery, and recognizing that “good enough” generally won’t keep you in the league.
We’ll see soon if Young has the drive to get his game where it needs to be.
Page 2: Stevens is in “no rush” to replace Erman
“I’ll take my time in figuring out what’s next (with the staff),” Stevens said Tuesday afternoon after a pre-draft workout. “I’m in no rush, certainly.”
According to multiple reports, Erman will take an associate head coach position on Alvin Gentry’s staff in New Orleans. A well-respected defensive strategist and player developer, Erman has worked for Boston twice: for four years under Doc Rivers and Tom Thibodeau, and again this past season under Stevens.
“It’s been pretty well-documented — he did a great job,” said Stevens, the Celtics head coach. “He’s very well-respected and has a lot of great abilities as a coach. Certainly, he’s a guy that I’m very fond of and hope for the best regardless.”

Assistants get plucked from teams on a regular basis… especially when it’s clear the coaching staff has done very well.
As for the question Chuck asked yesterday… why leave now for a lateral move?…
I’m just guessing here but let’s pretend to be the next-in-line-for-a-head-coach spot…. do you want to be in Boston, where wunderkind Brad Stevens is the belle of the coaching ball and in line for a 50-year contract extension if Ainge had his way…
… or would you want to be in a situation with a newly-hired coach with an 0k-but-not-great track record, a mega-star player in the making, and the sands falling through the hourglass before he becomes too disenchanted with the process to waste his career carrying teams to second-round playoff losses?
Just thinking of it from an Erman perspective… maybe my best path to being a head coach is becoming the interim coach in a few years when my head coach gets fired. And if I’m rolling the dice on that, my money is on Gentry getting the ax in a desperate move to placate Anthony Davis than Brad Stevens going anywhere unwillingly. Meanwhile, he gets to go work with one of the league’s next young superstars and, if all goes well for Erman, make him the anchor of a defensive juggernaut.
Again, Erman probably wants to be a head coach. GM’s and owners will see his success in New Orleans (assuming he has success) and want that for their teams.
So I get it. The chance to work with an emerging face of the league plus a greater chance of sliding into the seat to his left make sense. Plus, if it all goes to shit, the bars on Bourbon street are open all night… so he can go drink his sorrows away pretty easily. So there’s that.

And Finally….
… Contract talks between the Heat and Dwyane Wade are getting interesting. There’s a possibility he could opt out of his contract and hit free agency.
So what, you ask? Well, no Wade gives Miami a bunch of cap space to compete with Boston for free agents. And as much as I discount the notion that Boston isn’t attractive to free agents and they’ll go to good situations for good money… Miami could be a good situation with good money AND good weather and nightlife.
It also means the Heat could keep Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside while adding a free agent and returning to at least the 3/4/5 playoff seed range (depending on who they get).
Meanwhile Wade, who is no longer what he used to be but still pretty effective, could decide to go to a contender… maybe home to Chicago or back with his boy LeBron in Cleveland (obviously logistical things would need to happen to make him a fit) and make them stronger.
All of this stands in the way of the Celtics and their progression. The Wade/Miami marriage could be ending… and it could have a bit of a ripple effect on Boston’s plans. Just something to watch this summer.
