Your Morning Dump... Where the Celtics are looking for a point guard again

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Meanwhile, Dooling informed the Celtics of his plans to retire and the club is now left without a primary backup point guard to Rajon Rondo. Dooling had also emerged as Rondo’s mentor.

“Keyon has decided that he has given the NBA 12 good years and that it’s time to pursue other interests and spend more time with his family,” Dooling’s representative, Kenge Stevenson, said in a statement.

The Celtics wanted Dooling to return because of his steadiness and veteran presence. Now they are seeking a replacement just a week before training camp.

The loss of Dooling isn’t the most crushing blow.  It’s not the worst thing in the world for Jason Terry to bring the ball up and start the offense.  And it’s giving Terry’s new BFF Dionte Christmas a glimmer of hope for hooking on with the team.  Christmas is a combo guard too, but he got a little taste of running the point in Las Vegas when E’Twaun Moore got traded.

Remember, that was the day Rondo showed up and gave him a little coaching… leading to an immediate spike in assists.  Of course, I don’t put a ton of stock into summer league success… but it was still an encouraging sign that Dionte can take direction and find teammates.

I’m not sure what veteran point guards are around now that can make an impact.  I’ll throw Leandro Barbosa’s name out there.  Derek Fisher is also available.  Mind you, I’m just naming names.  I think Barbosa might be ok, but Fisher is way past his expiration date.
