Your Morning Dump...Where the Celtics Are Using

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

As I was making my rounds of NBA sites this weekend, I came across this picture of Rondo with what looked like goalie pads on. I was immediately intrigued and did some research. Rajon is wearing the NormaTec “MVP” compression recovery system in this pic.

The system uses what’s called “Sequential Pulse Technology” to massage the entire leg and foot as well as rejuvenate & refresh muscles. The MVP includes the large full-length leg boots, and a control unit/pump that dictates the amount and flow of pressure generated. It helps athletes recover from intense workouts, practices or game action and has also been used as post-operative therapy. From NormaTec’s webpage:

“While a healthy athlete’s body eventually will recover from an intense workout, using the Sequential Pulse Technology found only in a NormaTec Recovery System for just 20 minutes can speed recovery.”

NormaTec is a local company, based in Newton, Massachusetts, and their high-tech medical recovery products are also used by Kevin Garnett, Chris Wilcox & many other NBA athletes. Boston Celtics head trainer, Ed Lacerte, respected by many as the best in the business, has nothing but good things to say about the NormaTec recovery system. From their site:

…the NormaTec…quickly became a part of my daily routine with our players for both immediate injury management and post-operative care, and I am more than pleased with the results” –Ed Lacerte, Head Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapist, Boston Celtics

These bad boys run at a little under $2,000 each, and first broke on to the pro sports scene in 2007. Dr Laura Jacobs, a physician and PhD bioengineer, is the founder/inventor of NormaTec:

Dr. Laura F. Jacobs founded NormaTec after seeing an extraordinary need for effective treatment modalities for patients with circulation compromised by disease, surgery, radiation treatment and trauma. As a physician, she wanted the best care for her patients; as an engineer, she determined that the existing compression devices on the market were insufficient to meet that need. To solve this problem, Dr. Jacobs developed and patented the NormaTec PCD (Pneumatic Compression Device) and its unique massage pattern, Sequential Pulse Technology. The NormaTec PCD was engineered to effectively treat chronic wounds, breast cancer lymphedema, circulatory complications from diabetes, and other serious medical conditions.”

Pretty amazing stuff. You can read alot more about NormaTec on their site, and Wired also did a good piece on them.
