Your Morning Dump… Where the Celtics just signed another guard

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

The Boston Celtics added another name to the training camp equation Saturday in Marcus Georges-Hunt, an undrafted rookie out of Georgia Tech.

[…] The 6-foot-5 guard played four games with the Brooklyn Nets during summer league after four solid seasons at Georgia Tech. Georges-Hunt played at least 28 minutes per game in all four of his seasons with the Yellow Jackets and finished as the team’s leading scorer in three of his four seasons there. As a senior, he averaged 16.9 points, 3.3 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 0.9 steals per game. He was a 32.9 percent 3-point shooter, which doesn’t add too much encouragement for his abilities in that area.

MassLive: Boston Celtics sign undrafted rookie guard Marcus Georges-Hunt to training camp deal

Here we are talking about how the Celtics can pare down their roster and they go out and sign ANOTHER guy…

It’s actually a pretty meaningless signing in that it probably won’t impact the team at all. Georges-Hunt will almost certainly be cut at some point and go to the Red Claws. Maybe Danny Ainge is looking at the potential loss of Abdel Nader and Ben Bentil, both second-round picks that were intended to be stashed in Maine, and looking to beef up his D-League roster a little bit.

This is an interesting time in the NBA because second round picks are getting more money and better deals than first round picks. For example, second-year pro and 28th overall pick in 2015 RJ Hunter is making $1.2 million this year. Rookie Demetrius Jackson, the 45th overall pick in June, is making $1.45 million. Hunter was bound by the rookie wage scale for his slot. Jackson was free to negotiate whatever contract he wanted (so long as the Celtics had the cap space or exception to sign him).

This brings us to Abdel Nader, who is still unsigned. The Celtics still have a nearly $2.9 million room exception to use if they decided to sign Nader, but they’re out of spots as it is. Georges-Hunt is the 19th player on the roster and maximum the team can carry into camp is 20… and that would be the spot reserved for Nader himself. He had a nice summer and his agent is touting him as NBA-ready, but let’s not delude ourselves here… he’s not going to make the Celtics. In fact, he’s probably not going to make any roster other than maybe Brooklyn’s, which may or may not be in his best interests.

For Nader, it might be best to just live up to his promise to go to the D-League and see how good he can be there. The Celtics will have more spots opening up next season and he could have a chance to compete then. There is also the possibility of a mid-season trade that could gut the team of some of its reserves, meaning Nader, if he’s shown he’s good enough, could join the team in the spring and fill an end-of-bench role.

But the uncertainty of his situation and Danny Ainge’s desire to find diamonds in the rough leads us to signings like Georges-Hunt. It’s like Ainge is walking through front yards looking for shrubbery that’s been poorly cared-for. He’s happy to re-plant and nurture them in his own garden and see if he can get them to blossom over time. If not, so be it. But if he can, he’s suddenly got a yard the whole neighborhood can envy.

Congrats to IT. If you follow him on Instagram you’ll see a bunch of photos and videos involving some of his Celtics teammates at the wedding. Seemed like a nice night. Also… gotta give it up to Isaiah for his wedding outfit.
