Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
During an 89-72 loss Game 2 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, Boston set a shot-clock era NBA playoff game low for points in the first quarter with seven.
…
During the first quarter, Hawks sharpshooter Kyle Korver (12 points in the quarter) outscored the Celtics by himself and teammate Jeff Teague (seven) tied them. Brad Stevens’ team tallied just one field goal over the first 7:53 to fall behind 24-3. Incredibly, Boston held Atlanta scoreless over the final 5:28 of the quarter — and still entered the second quarter with a 24-7 deficit.
A couple weeks back I noted that Boston has only four players shooting above the league average eFG%.
They are Jae Crowder (ankle), Kelly Olynyk (DNP), Avery Bradley (DNP), and Amir Johnson.
Anyone surprised by last night’s abysmal shooting needs to get their surprise sensor recalibrated. I have absolutely no idea why this team is as bad at shooting the basketball as it is, and frankly, I’m getting tired of it. I’m a big fan of Stevens, as big a fan as anyone, really, but this is a major and ongoing problem. Marcus Smart, Jared Sullinger, Tyler Zeller and Jonas Jerebko have all regressed year over year. These are not guys who are at the tail end of their careers either. These are guys who by all rights should be improving year over year, and when it comes to that most basketball of basketball activities, that of putting the ball into the basket, the Celtics are not only bad, they’re getting worse.
I don’t know if the Celtics need to shake up their coaching staff and bring in a guy who can help these guys out, or what, but the fact of the matter is, we’re reaching a point where there won’t be anymore excuses for crappy shooting.
Page 2: Where Evan Turner’s a free agent this summer
B/R: The projected jump in the salary cap this summer will surely be nice for your free agency as well, yes?
Turner: I’ve been blessed so far financially. I came out when I was a rookie and with my endorsement deals and everything, I was making close to eight figures a year. I had some of my worst times with basketball then. When my payment got reduced, I had some of my most fun times.
I think it goes back to making sure it’s fun, man. Enjoying coming to work. Sometimes, the financials are not always going to do it for me. I want to win, have the opportunity to play and play a lot.
Boston’s not going to spend crazy money on Turner this summer, and there’s probably some other team out there that will offer him crazy money. Turner’s certainly earned a raise from the not-even-mid-level-exception money he’s making right now, and Boston has enough cap space to take care of him. However, Boston’s not going to sign him first, and by the time they get around to negotiating with him, it’s possible that some desperate organization will be in “throw $16M at Carlos Boozer just to say we did something” mode. Boston’s not going to compete with an desperation bid from a crappy organization. The question is, will Turner be smart enough to realize that he’s not likely to win with–or enjoy playing for–an organization making loony offers for rotation players?
Finally: Relax
Celtics are going to have enough room for two max players + Isaiah Thomas, eight draft picks, and unlike some teams, landing the #5 seed is hardly a high water mark for the franchise.
