Your Morning Dump… Where we go inside Kevin Durant’s meeting with the Cs

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Up-and-coming team: With 39-year-old Brad Stevens and his new long-term deal at the controls, these Celtics won 48 games and competed for a top spot in the East last season. Isaiah Thomas elevated to All-Star status, and Boston thrived behind an affordable and intriguing young core that includes the likes of Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, and Marcus Smart. Players like Thomas remain adamant that Boston is just one player away from being a legitimate contender.

Cap space: The Celtics have a nine-man core signed to less than $34 million in guaranteed salary for next season. Thanks to draft-and-stash possibilities, Boston is unlikely to dent too much salary despite making six picks in Thursday’s draft, and that leaves Boston with enough cap space to pursue two max-contract free agents this summer. The biggest part of Boston’s pitch would be: Pick a friend to join you here. If Durant wants to play with fellow free agent Al Horford, the Celtics can sign both (and still have enough cash left to fill out their roster with the sort of capable role players that every title contender needs). If Durant prefers a star already on another roster, the Celtics have the assets to try to pry that player free.

ESPN Boston – Pitch perfect: Boston Celtics could make strong case to Kevin Durant

Is it possible we’ve reached Kevin Durant overkill yet? Is it possible this morning’s dump will do it? Maybe? Well, let’s pile on, shall we? The Celtics chances of getting Kevin Durant are about the same as were the Jamaican bobsled team’s of winning gold in Cool Runnings (nevermind the actual Olympic games on which the movie was based). With that said, those bobsleders were mere turns away from shocking the world, and Danny, along with whomever he brings to New York to meet Durant at least have a seat at the table.

Forsberg mentions sustainability and tradition as the other two selling points that could appear as slides (replete with cool animations) on Ainge’s powerpoint presentation to KD. In listening to plenty of talk radio and Celtics related news since Durant announced he’d listen to the Celtics, one thing that keeps getting brought up is how the Cs would be in much better position to snag Durant if Jimmy Butler was already here.

Here in Boston, some are so locked in on recreating the Ray Allen-becomes-KG scenario that it’s pigeonholed them into believing there is no other way to either build a contender, or bring in a star player. One thing is clear, Durant can love Larry Bird and tradition and future flexibility all he wants, but if the Cs only plan to make cosmetic changes to the roster around him, there’s no chance he chooses Boston. The Celtics will need to sell Durant on the “reverse KG”– Bring in the big fish first, and then use him to remodel the roster with the addition of another all-star of his choosing.

Anyways, are you sick of it yet? I was one of the people who eye-rolled those on twitter who dared to dream of KD in green after his comments about how much he loved Boston when the Thunder came to town and rolled the Cs this past season. Now? I’m still a bit skeptical, but when you’re a 16-seed like the Cs are in Durant Madness (or stick with the Jamaican bobsled team analogy if it better suits you), it’s hard not to start dreaming just a little bit.

On page 2: Stevens wants versatility in free agency

Regardless of which free agents wind up in Boston, you can count on versatility being one of their strengths.

“I only look at the game in four spots; ball-handlers, wings, guys that can play that three-swing spot (some power forward as well as small forward) and bigs,” Stevens said. “The more versatile, the more position-less, the better. That overall provides more opportunities than it does not. That’s a positive when you talk about guys that can do different things at different positions.”

CSNNE – Celtics must address needs with free agency on the horizon

The blueprint from the draft, which was headlined by Jaylen Brown, a multi-positional defender, seems as though it will be extrapolated to the Cs plan in free agency. Of the four groups that Stevens looks to fill, the Cs could still use another big (re-signing Amir Johnson and elevating Jordan Mickey could be the remedy) and perhaps a wing and a “three-swing spot” guy.

The question becomes, if the Cs strike out on Durant and Horford, in what aisles of free agency do they choose to shop? Money won’t be an issue, but the Cs will likely turn their attention to having complete flexibility in 2017 as they try to lure a deeper crop of impact free agents. Blakely references Ryan Anderson who projects as a better version of Kelly Olynyk. The Cs need shooting, but do they want it out of the stretch four position when Stevens and Ainge are trending more towards players who can guard multiple positions?

And finally, we may not see Zizic and Yabusele this summer

“We’ve had initial discussions with their representatives,” said Danny Ainge, Boston’s president of basketball operations, when I asked him about it during the team’s press conference to introduce the newest Celtics on Friday. “We have not concluded anything yet. We’re still in that discussion. And I’m not sure about summer (league).”

While it remains an option, a league source told CSNNE.com that it’s unlikely that either player will participate in either of Boston’s summer league squads which will play in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.

CSNNE – Yabusele, Zizic – may not be able to play in summer league for Cs

Someone in the comments may correct me here, but the Cs have never had a (somewhat) high-profile draft and stash player before and now they have two. Celtics fans demonstrated on draft night just how much they want the front office’s moves to make immediate impacts and there’s no better place to start getting excited about players’ potential than in summer league. Yes, summer league, the magical place where Marcus Banks was Allen Iverson and Gerald Green was Vince Carter.

We’ll just have to trust that in 2-3 years, when the Cs want to add depth to a title contending team, that Zizic and/or Yabusele are the guys to do it. Until then, start finding websites that stream French and Croatian league basketball.
