Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
I think we all agree that the Celtics’ top eight players heading into training camp will be Rondo, Bradley and Green joined by Kelly Olynyk, Jared Sullinger, Tyler Zeller, Evan Turner (whenever he signs, which is expected to happen in time for him to be in training camp) and Marcus Smart.
Expect Brad Stevens to go at least 10 deep most nights, which means there’s only a couple spots left to fight for among the rest of the players.
I agree with Sherrod Blakely’s assessment that Marcus Thornton, Brandon Bass and Gerald Wallace are the three players fighting for the remaining two spots.
If you gave Danny Ainge truth serum, he’d let all three walk for nothing if some team was willing to take the contracts.
If Brad Stevens needs offense, he’ll look to Marcus Thornton. If the team needs a defensive spark, Gerald Wallace might get the call.
I feel for Brandon Bass. He’s been nothing but a true pro during his time in Boston. But, unfortunately, he’s stuck in the youth movement. Sullinger and Olynyk need to play 35+ minutes per night. And the C’s are going to give the 7-foot Zeller every opportunity to prove he’s worthy of consistent minutes. Zeller has what Bass will never have: height.
I’m hopeful Bass and Thornton get moved at the deadline. Crash Wallace is stuck with us for at least another season.
Evan Turner is an interesting option. The Celtics are clearly intrigued with his talent and optimistic they can turn him around. But I pray they didn’t offer him a multiple year offer.
On Page 2, the C’s are headed to exotic Waltham for camp.
The Celtics announced Friday that they’ll hold media day for the upcoming season Sept. 29 at their training facility in Waltham and that training camp will begin the following day at the same location.
Training camp, which was held in Newport, R.I., last year, will last through Oct. 5. The Celtics open their eight-game preseason schedule against the 76ers Oct. 6 at TD Garden.
Newly formed championship caliber teams hold camp in Rome. Teams with playoff aspirations hold camp in Newport. Lottery bound teams stay in Waltham.
