I don’t know if you can come up with a more frustrating player on the Brewers’ roster this season than Carlos Gomez. I don’t even know how many “Is Gomez Going to Figure it Out?” posts I’ve made this year. Fool me once, fine, I’m a sucker for tools. Fool me twice and I look like an idiot, but goddamn can you run fast.
Gomez is on a pretty long (for him) hot streak, hitting .375 in the past six games, going back to the day where he became a semi-regular starter again. I’m refusing to get sucked in this time. Allow me to count the ways this screams fluke:
One, it’s six freaking games.
Two, it’s September. Never trust breakout performances in September.
Three, he may be hitting .375, but guess what his OBP is during that stretch? Yep, .375. Still no plate discipline.
Four, his BABIP in those six games is .391. That’s nearly 100 points higher than his season BABIP of .298.
Five, he’s burned us before with these hot streaks. From April 18 to April 26, he hit .296 (with a .400 BABIP). From July 16 to July 22, he hit .429 (with a BABIP of .600). Even the worst everyday players find something over the course of a week.
Who knows, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe he realizes his roster spot may be in jeopardy and he’s finally producing. Maybe he’s playing better now that he’s being pushed by the likes of Lorenzo Cain. It’s easy to forget he’s still young — just a few months older than Cain — so maybe he’ll put it together, despite the stunted development.
I’m just betting against it.
