The Blues weren’t expected to bring back Zbynek Michalek and that became official as the defenseman headed back to the Arizona Coyotes with a two-year, $6.4 million contract. The Blues originally acquired Michalek from the Coyotes prior to the 2014-15 trade deadline in exchange for Maxim Letunov and a conditional third-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.
Michalek was the “big” acquisition by the Blues at the deadline last year – if there really was such a thing – and now his chapter with the team is over. He skated in 15 regular season games (two goals, two assists, +3) and six playoff games (no points, -2). Overall, Michalek was a non-factor and didn’t really upgrade the St. Louis defense. He was solid, but nothing extraordinary.
This rental wasn’t expensive, but it proved to be another mediocre deadline acquisition by the Blues which proved to be short lived.
