Zuccarello Shines in Whale Season Debut (Updated)

Update, 5:42 p.m.:
Here’s video of Zuccarello’s 2g, 1a night…

Original Post:
In his season debut with the CT Whale, Mats Zuccarello had two goals and an assist to help lift the Rangers AHL affiliate to a 5-0 win over the Manchester Monarchs.

“He’s a nifty passer and sees the ice well,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander of Zuccarello. “He’s a clever player and a lot of fun to watch.”

Here’s Zuccarello after the game…

“I’m here to show that I can be a player that can contribute offensively in the NHL,” said Zuccarello. “That’s everybody’s dream down here, to play there, I’ve been there and I know I can play there, I just have to keep doing it here.”

…all Zuccarello proved last night is that he’s a very good AHL player. Which doesn’t necessarily translate into NHL success.

Also in the game, Carl Hagelin continued to prove he’s not far away from being NHL ready. Leslie Treff at Hockey’s Future NY Rangers Blog says this about the Whale winger, who almost scored his second short-handed breakaway of the season last night…

“Hagelin’s timing, thinking and anticipating the play are improving each week. He should be ready for NHL play before the end of the season.”

…bring this kid up now!!!!
