Taking an RV Trip to Louisville? Why You Need to Catch a Game While You’re Here

At a glance, you might not think of Louisville as much of a “sports city.”

However, when you look at the city’s resume by the numbers and based on the behind its sporting events, you may want to think twice. What does Louisville have to offer the average sports fan? For starters, keep in mind that the city boasts…

  • The Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball team, with over 76 NCAA title wins as part of the team’s storied history
  • The Kentucky Derby, which attracted well over 150,000 spectators in addition to millions watching at home
  • Louisville City FC, the currently USL champions and one of the most well-attended teams in the second division of U.S. soccer

And that doesn’t even scratch the surface of the minor league teams around town, too.

If you’re renting an RV in Louisville or are just passing through for a camping trip, we recommend that you try to catch some sort of sporting event while you’re here. Family fun is guaranteed; meanwhile, you can likely spot to set up camp that isn’t too far from whatever stadium or field you’re looking to frequent.

Below we’ve offered some tips and suggestions for RV campers looking to see Louisville and enjoy a bit of lively competition during their trip. Regardless of what time of year you show up, there’s likely something going on for you.

Checking Out the Louisville Cardinals

In town between November and April? Plan to catch a Cardinals basketball game while you’re here! If you can’t score tickets prior to the game, bear in mind that they are available secondhand via the web and many fans sell their tickets on game day as well.

If nothing else, there’s plenty to see and do around the University of Louisville, including checking out Cardinal Stadium (a plus if you’re a football fan) and the Kentucky Derby Museum.

See Churchill Downs for Yourself

The site of the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs is a sight to behold whether or not you’re a big fan of horse-racing. Even if you’re just in the area for the Derby without actually having tickets or you just want to see the racetrack up close, you’re in for a treat. Bear in mind that there are plenty of campsites near Churchill Downs which are RV-friendly, a nice bonus if you want to be near the track and the University, respectively.

Scoring with Louisville City

Soccer has seen somewhat of a resurgence in the United States in recent year, and Louisville City FC has not disappointed its fans.

Founded in 2014, the team plays at the historic Louisville Slugger Field in front of thousands of thrilled USL fans every season. Heck, seeing a game just might make you a believer!
