DeAngelo Williams is stiff-arming Father Time straight out of his sandals. The NFL’s oldest running back at age 33, Williams is proving that not every player at his position burns out by their late twenties. He leads all running backs in rushing yards in 2016 (237) and has been a rare free agent steal for the Steelers since the Panthers cut him loose before the 2015 season.
Back then, it did seem reasonable to question whether the end was near-injuries limited him to just six games in 2014, and he averaged a career-worst 3.5 yards per carry. How many thirty-something running backs rebound from that?
Williams certainly did. With patience to let holes develop, enough burst to still break outside, and sticky hands, he has filled in admirably for oft-injured, oft-suspended star Le’Veon Bell. On a per-carry basis, he has arguably been a top 10 back over the past two years.
Williams isn’t only keeping the Steelers in Super Bowl contention with his late career resurgence-he’s also burnishing a resume which makes him one of the better dual run/catch threats of the past decade.
