Tackle Ryan Clady is done for the year. The New York Jets moved him to IR today. The Jets also wrote on Twitter that:
“We have signed DL Anthony Johnson off NE’s practice squad & activated WR Devin Smith from the PUP list.”
On top of that, DL Jarvis Jenkins was waived and offensive tackle Zach Sterup was added to the team’s practice squad.
The Clady news is perhaps the biggest. The Jets signed him in the offseason after the Denver Broncos decided to let him walk. A former high pick who was at one time thought of as a top-five left tackle, he’d struggled with injuries in Denver. They gave him a large contract extension, saw multiple injuries push him to the sidelines for most of that deal, and finally cut their losses.
The Jets knew just how good he could be if he stayed healthy. They signed him with the hopes that he’d get back to what he was three or four years ago, but it never materialized. Now he’s back to IR, the place he’s been for most of the past few seasons.
The only good news for Clady is that the issue is not with his knees, which troubled him so significantly in Denver. It’s a rotator cuff injury that has him out now. That doesn’t change this season, but it does make it more likely that he can rehab in the offseason and come back for 2017.
Bringing Smith back at WR is also significant for a team that has struggled on offense. He was their second-round pick a year ago, but he suffered a knee injury and wasn’t able to return until now.
