Top 10 sports stories of 2016: Warriors blew a 3-1 lead

Today’s installment of the top 10 sports stories of 2016 can honestly be looked at in two different ways. On one hand, LeBron James delivered on the promise of bringing a championship to Cleveland, something he felt his career would be incomplete without.

Not only did the Cavs win the 2016 NBA Championship, but they did so after one of the greatest series comebacks in all if sports, surviving a 3-1 deficit.

On the other hand, the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead.

While the former could also be seen as one of the feel-good stories of 2016 with a usually down-trodden city bringing home its first championship in many years, the latter became a meme for many months to follow.

Going into the 2016 NBA playoffs, the Warriors were coming off a historic season, setting an NBA record for the best regular season record, finishing 73-9.  Steph Curry was having an electric MVP season, and the Warriors looked as if they were on their way to their second consecutive NBA title.

Games 1 and 2 saw dominant wins by the Warriors, winning by 15 and 33 respectively. The Cavs would come back with a 30 point win of their own in Game 3 before the Warriors went up 3-1 with a 108-97 victory in Game 4.

From there, the Warriors near perfect season started to come crashing down. Although coming back from 3-1 seemed all but impossible, Cleveland took Games 5 and 6, leading many to wonder if they could pull of the comeback.

Fans at the Oracle Arena were ready to see the Warriors put the Cavs away for good, but James’s 27 points helped Cleveland topple the defending champions, capping of a miraculous series for the Cavs, and a silencing end for the Warriors.
