The Philadelphia Eagles could be looking to upgrade the wide receiver position and may have to reach out to an old friend to do so.
According to Zac Jackson of ProFootballTalk, the Eagles and San Francisco 49ers are discussing a trade involving wide receiver Torrey Smith. On the one hand, Jackson reports that no deal is imminent between the two teams.
On the other hand, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, multiple teams are showing interest in Smith as the 49ers are open to trading him.
This does not come as a surprise that the Eagles are looking to acquire a wide receiver, as they are still lacking a reliable veteran option. Despite acquiring wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham from the Tennessee Titans in the preseason, Eagles’ executive vice president Howie Roseman has been searching for more weapons to equip rookie quarterback Carson Wentz with.
Currently, the Eagles’ leading receiver is Jordan Matthews, with 25 receptions for 354 receiving yards and two touchdowns. While those numbers are solid, Matthews still needs some help.
Smith, who is only 27 years-old, can give Matthews and the rest of the Eagles’ offense what they have been missing since DeSean Jackson. A wide receiver, who can blow the top off of opposing defenses.
This season, Smith only has 13 receptions for 199 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The main reason why Smith’s numbers are down this year is because of the inconsistent play at quarterback in San Francisco.
It has not been a good season for the 49ers thus far and just maybe the Eagles can reach out to an old ‘friend’ in Chip Kelly to see what it would take to acquire a talent like Smith.
It will be interesting to see if the Eagles make a move as the NFL trade deadline is only a week away.
Update
Torrey Smith may not be the only wide receiver that the Eagles are targeting. According to CBSSports.com Jason La Canfora, the Birds could inquire about Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.
This season, Jeffery has not been happy with what’s going on in the Windy City and a change of scenery could be what he needs as he will be a free agent in 2017.
