The Redskins fired the defensive coordinator after two futile years in which he failed to improve on Jim Haslett\u2019s run on the job.<\/p>\n<p>The Redskins also fired the defensive line coach and the defensive backfield coach.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Had heard complaints about Fewell since beginning of last season. Thought it had improved. (Kudos to OLB <strong>Ryan Kerrigan<\/strong> for making the Pro Bowl.)<\/p>\n<p>Safety has been a deep hole since <strong>Sean Taylor\u2019s<\/strong> death.<\/p>\n<p>Barry knew the risks when he took the job. Barry got the job because he snow jobbed <strong>Jay Gruden<\/strong> with what he could do with the talent here. It just didn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fixing the problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GM <strong>Scot McCloughan<\/strong> prefers to build through the Draft, but any player drafted in 2017 will not be much of a factor until 2018 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>McCloughan\u00a0in the first round\u00a0selects the best talent available regardless of team need.<\/p>\n<p>He selected wide receiver <strong>Josh Doctson<\/strong> first in the 2016 Draft when the Redskins were loaded at the position.<\/p>\n<p>Doctson was a whiff\u00a0since he missed virtually the entire season with an Achilles injury. (PLEASE, don\u2019t be <strong>Malcolm Kelly!<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>McCloughan\u2019s first ever pick for Washington was G <strong>Brandon Schreff<\/strong> in 2015. Scherff is a hit. He just made his first Pro Bowl.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><em>Let that sink in. The Redskins have TWO offensive linemen named to the Pro Bowl.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was a happy coincidence that Scherff was at the top of the Redskins Draft board to join a struggling offensive line. Neither Scherff or Doctson helped the defense.<\/p>\n<p>It will be a happy coincidence if\u00a0Washington&#8217;s first pick in the 2017 Draft is a defensive player. Any young player picked in a lower round will need\u00a0time and NFL game experience to round out into a contributor, whatever time it takes to appear in 36 games.<\/p>\n<p>We won&#8217;t know the keepers until the third year of their rookie contracts.<\/p>\n<p>If the Redskins are better next season, it will be because of players like <strong>Su\u2019a Cravens<\/strong> already on the team.<\/p>\n<p>What the &#8216;Skins\u00a0need is a coach that excels in developing talent more than scheming plays.
