Now both Ladd and Boychuk must be protected in the upcoming expansion draft.<\/p>\n<p>The Islanders, along with the other 29 teams in the NHL, will have to compile a list of players to protect in the expansion draft, which will take place on June 21. The Islanders can either protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters and one goalie.<\/p>\n<p>Both Ladd and Boychuk have large contracts with the Islanders. Ladd signed a seven-year $38.5 million last offseason and Boychuk is two years into a five-year $42 million contract.<\/p>\n<p>With both players still in the early stages of their long-term deals, it was highly unlikely that Islanders general manager Garth Snow would ask them to waive their no-movement clauses.<\/p>\n<p>And while Boychuk battled injuries and struggled at times this past season, he remains a big part of the Islanders\u2019 blue line.
