The team clearly needs to get better up front, and there is a strong likelihood of losing a solid defender to Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>No matter who they lose in the expansion draft, the time has come for this team to take the next step. No longer is winning a playoff round an accomplishment. The Islanders have not had home-ice advantage in a playoff series since Ronald Reagan was president. The game, the world, and the planet are extremely different places now. It\u2019s time for the Isles to adapt as well.<\/p>\n<p>The team would love to protect all their defensemen in the expansion draft, but that\u2019s just not possible. They are going to have to lose a good player. The Isles are not worried about losing a guy like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/seidede01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dennis Seidenberg<\/a>. That simply won\u2019t happen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boychjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Johnny Boychuk<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/leddyni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nick Leddy<\/a>? Safe. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hamontr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Travis Hamonic<\/a> is either going to be traded or protected. That leaves <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dehaaca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Calvin de Haan<\/a>, a restricted free agent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pelecad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Adam Pelech<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayfisc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Scott Mayfield<\/a>, Ryan Pulock, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hicketh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Thomas Hickey<\/a>. Adam Pelech and Scott Mayfield are not going to be selected. de Haan, Pulock, or Hickey are the logical choices here.<\/p>\n<p>The rules are pretty simple. The Islanders must protect either seven forwards, three defensemen and a goaltender. Or\u00a0any eight skaters and a single\u00a0goaltender. The goalie they will protect is 99% going to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/greisth01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Thomas Greiss<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There could be a million different ways to go.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say for argument\u2019s sake they protect just three defenders. That leaves a lot of talent, including a top prospect like Pulock, unprotected. So, we go with the eight skater option. Forwards protected will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tavarjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">John Tavares<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laddan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Andrew Ladd<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/leean01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anders Lee<\/a>, and either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bailejo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Josh Bailey<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nelsobr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brock Nelson<\/a>. If they protected both, again you have a bevy of available defenders. It would be hard to see the Islanders leaving a guy like Nelson unprotected. Josh Bailey had an excellent resurgence last year, but Nelson has had 20 or more goals in each of the last three seasons, and he is going to be just 26 at the start of the season. If Vegas selects Bailey, more power to them. It won\u2019t be a gigantic loss for the Islanders. Vegas could easily go with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cizikca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Casey Cizikas<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cluttca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cal Clutterbuck<\/a>, or even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chimeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jason Chimera<\/a> if they were to take a forward.<\/p>\n<p>One thing is for sure, the Islanders will look drastically different than they did last year. Simply put, things didn\u2019t work for a long enough time last season. Within the next month we should know the answer to the following questions:<\/p>\n<p>Will the Islanders sign Tavares to a long-term extension and put all the rumors to bed once and for all?<\/p>\n<p>Will Tavares finally get the winger he so desires to take the next step?<\/p>\n<p>Will the Isles acquire <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/eberljo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jordan Eberle<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/duchema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matt Duchene<\/a>? At what cost?<\/p>\n<p>What will the defense look like?<\/p>\n<p>Who will the Islanders protect in the expansion draft?<\/p>\n<p>Are there any exciting prospects at pick 15 in the NHL Entry Draft or will they package the pick in a bigger deal?<\/p>\n<p>Will the Islanders sign a free agent to go along with any new acquisition?<\/p>\n<p>Then of course in the months following we will learn more about guys like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barzama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mathew Barzal<\/a> making the team, as well as a guy like Ryan Pulock (should he stay).<\/p>\n<p>The Islanders are entering a potentially very busy off-season with a lot of unanswered questions.
