Securing Meaningful September Games."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The week ended with a Mike Wacha <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/gameday\/braves-vs-cardinals\/2017\/08\/13\/491848?partnerId=LR_box#game_tab=box,game_state=,game=491848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dud<\/a> on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>But the other 6 days?<\/p>\n<p>They transformed the 2017 season from an undramatic slog into a 5 week sprint for a division title.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">44 games to go for the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Cardinals?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Cardinals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>22 of them against the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Cubs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Cubs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Brewers?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Brewers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Pirates?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Pirates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#39;s on in the NL Central.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/stlcards?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#stlcards<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tom Ackerman (@Ackerman1120) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ackerman1120\/status\/897055068863827968?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 14, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>For the record&#8230; it&#8217;s unclear if 50% of the remaining games being against these three teams is the best thing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4-8 vs Cubs (.333 winning%)<\/li>\n<li>6-8 vs Brewers (.429 winning%)<\/li>\n<li>5-4 vs Pirates (.556 winning%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regardless&#8230; the Cardinals find themselves 1 game in arrears of the Cubs in the NL Central (2 games back in the loss column).<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"The Cardinals Real Win Last Week? We just wanted the Cardinals to do SOMETHING.<\/p>\n<p>+++++<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s taken me 116 games, but I&#8217;m ready to admit that the Cubs aren&#8217;t the same team that won the World Series in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they were too young or too naive to feel the weight of a 108-year championship drought in 2016. A year later, though, one of the most talented collection of players in MLB has finally let their Cub flag fly as they continue to play hot potato with success.<\/p>\n<p>I was firmly convinced that at some point Chicago would rip off 8\/10 and leave the rest of the division in the dust.<\/p>\n<p>They haven&#8217;t, though.<\/p>\n<p>And now the Cardinals have used a scorching hot 10-game stretch to put themselves right into the thick of a playoff hunt.<\/p>\n<p>+++++<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t tell you whats going to happen the rest of the way out.<\/p>\n<p>Most Cardinals fans &#8211; as far as I can tell &#8211; are pretty much dismissing the Brewers and Pirates, focusing all their attention on the Cubs.<\/p>\n<p>While they haven&#8217;t shown the propensity to go on a sustained hot streak, the Cubs are more than capable of doing such.<\/p>\n<p>Will they?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe. Maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>But as we get ready to cross the midway point of August, the chances of a tear of wins propelling the Cubs (or any other NL Central team) past the finish much earlier than the end of September becomes less likely.<\/p>\n<p>Round 9 of 12 (of an admittedly sloppy fight) was just completed&#8230; this bout is going to go to the scorecards.<\/p>\n<p>+++++<\/p>\n<p>At this point I&#8217;m just happy to see the Cardinals in the mix.<\/p>\n<p>For all the great times we&#8217;ve had this week, we&#8217;ve had roughly 17 other weeks that were far less enjoyable. An economist might predict we&#8217;ll see something closer to the 17 average than the 2 spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217; time to find out if the 2017 team has got a closing kick.<\/p>\n<p>The Cardinals briefly occupied 1st place in the division, but that wasn&#8217;t the real accomplishment.
