{"id":825972,"date":"2014-02-01T13:02:56","date_gmt":"2014-02-01T21:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cowbellkingdom.com\/?p=26762"},"modified":"2014-02-01T13:02:56","modified_gmt":"2014-02-01T21:02:56","slug":"is-isaiah-thomas-just-a-good-player-on-a-bad-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/news\/is-isaiah-thomas-just-a-good-player-on-a-bad-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Isaiah Thomas just a good player on a bad team?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"docs-internal-guid-1975eabc-eed4-28c2-258c-b68a44bb8bc5\">More often than not, the Sacramento Kings have put a poor product on the floor. \u00a0I\u2019m not talking about the 2013-14 season or the Maloof era, but the entire 29 seasons the team has played in California\u2019s capital city.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bad basketball. \u00a0That is what Kings fans have been treated to for 19 of the 29 years since the team moved west from Kansas City before the 1985-86 season.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With all that losing, fans have become accustom to the concept of a good player on a bad team putting up inflated numbers. \u00a0I\u2019m not talking about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/theusre01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Reggie Theus<\/a><\/strong> in the early years or the seven-year run of excellence by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/richmmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Mitch Richmond<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What I\u2019m talking about is the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carran01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Antoine Carr<\/a><\/strong>-type player that posts a career average of 9.3 points per game over 16 seasons in the NBA, but 19.7 points per game in his 110-game stint in Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccraro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rodney McCray<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/webbsp01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Spud Webb<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmoli01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Lionel Simmons<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martike02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Martin<\/a><\/strong> and maybe even Marcus Thornton could fit into this category, too. \u00a0Even on a bad team, someone has to score points.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sacramento isn\u2019t unique in this concept. \u00a0There is always a player or two that looks like a near All-Star for a losing team, but in reality, they are a third or fourth option and maybe even less on a good team. \u00a0They elevate their stats momentarily, but over the course of their career a clearer picture develops.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What makes Sacramento special in this category, is the sheer volume of seasons mired in mediocrity.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We have talked at length about Isaiah Thomas and whether he is as good as his statistics say that he is. Is he truly a player that can sustain a 21.5 player efficiency rating? \u00a0Can he average 20 points per game, while shooting 45 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range? \u00a0More importantly, if you took him off the Kings and placed him on a team bound for 50 wins and an extended playoff run, would he hold up as a frontline starter or would he level off as a solid role player?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Watching the 24-year old point guard perform over the last few games has shaken plenty of fans in the pro-Thomas camp. \u00a0Despite scoring plenty of points and keeping the Kings close against quality teams, there were too many instances of hero ball and way too many losses.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That is not the feeling that Thomas wanted to portray. \u00a0He wanted to show the world that without DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay, he could put the Kings on his muscular 5-foot-9 frame and pick up a few much needed wins.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Instead, Thomas has looked single-minded much of the time. \u00a0He looks like a player trying to fill up the stat sheet, as much as a player looking to will his team to victory. \u00a0It\u2019s a small sample size, but the look and feel of Thomas in these games said player with inflated stats on a bad team.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That\u2019s a fine line. \u00a0One that is easier to walk when you are surrounded with players like Cousins and Gay.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hopefully this was a good learning experience, if Thomas takes that route. \u00a0But even if he does not, it still helps further define who Thomas is as a player.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Thomas can\u2019t do it alone. \u00a0He is not <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paulch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Paul<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">LeBron James<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Durant<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0But he is a player that can play to an elite level when called upon. \u00a0He has consistently held his own and even dominated players that are All-Star caliber.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s not about personal success when you are the leader of a team.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There is no question that Thomas is being noticed around the league.\u00a0 Opposing coaches have made it a point in both pregame and postgame interviews to talk about how he is underrated as a player and every bit as good as his stats say that he is.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\nHowever, the question is still there. \u00a0Is Thomas a solid player who is flourishing on a bad team or does his game transcend the Kings&#8217; 15-31 record?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I believe the answer is somewhere in between. \u00a0After watching every single one of his professional games either live or through TV, I can tell you that Isaiah Thomas would fit on any team in the NBA. \u00a0If not a starter, he would be a rotational player on every team in the league.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-26771\" alt=\"Isaiah Thomas attacks the paint against the Philadelphia 76ers. (Photo: Tobin Halsey)\" src=\"http:\/\/cowbellkingdom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Sixers-10-of-38_2.jpg\" width=\"303\" height=\"455\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He may not average 20 points per game on a good team, but he might. \u00a0Thomas is an efficient scorer from both inside and out. \u00a0He is an exceptional ball-handler and can be a solid defender.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But what is clear, is that the Kings are better when Thomas is the second or third option.\u00a0 His skills mesh perfectly with Cousins as a partner in the pick and roll game and with Gay as a draw-and-kick point guard.\u00a0 But there are plenty of point guards that would flourish alongside those two players.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If there is an indictment against Thomas, it is that he has the ability to make Cousins and Gay better, but the same can\u2019t be said for many of his other teammates. \u00a0That is where Thomas has to improve as a point guard and a leader. \u00a0If he can make Jason Thompson, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willide02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Derrick\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willide02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-cowbellkingdom.com\" target=\"_blank\">Williams<\/a><\/strong>, Marcus Thornton and Ben McLemore better, then the Kings will win more games.<\/p>\n<p>The jury is still out. \u00a0Sacramento doesn\u2019t need Thomas to go for 30 or more when the stars are out. \u00a0They need him to pull those missing points from the remaining 10 players around him. \u00a0That is the true test of a leader.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas has shown that he can average 20 points and six assists per game on a 15-31 team. \u00a0 Individual accomplishments are nice, but now it is time for him to convert personal success into wins for his team.\u00a0 Until then, he will just be another 20 point scorer on a losing team.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Third-year point guard Isaiah Thomas still has plenty to prove.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[610259261],"tags":[610260294,34017575,551457,5204276,610259426,35890,522941,610259429,733332,1027796,142718,610259519,4764763,610259673,610259462,1419906,76563,610259222],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.2 (Yoast SEO v22.2) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Is Isaiah Thomas just a good player on a bad team?
