Andrew Fillipponi said Steelers running back Le\u2019Veon Bell has never played in a Steelers\u2019 playoff victory (false), while Paul Zeise said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/taillja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jameson Taillon<\/a> is the Pirates\u2019 biggest disappointment of the 2018 season.<\/h2>\n<p>But the one comment that really took the cake on a rather ridiculous day was Colin Dunlap, host of the Fan\u2019s morning show, writing on Twitter that the Pirates needed to trade away not only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/polangr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gregory Polanco<\/a>, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martest01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Starling Marte<\/a>, because both are \u201cliabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">hardly. it&#39;s to get rid of Polanco and Marte, who are liabilities.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Colin Dunlap (@colin_dunlap) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/colin_dunlap\/status\/1016296778499534848?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 9, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>While one can argue that Polanco is a liability (I have), having the audacity to put out there publicly that, as a member of the sports media in the city of Pittsburgh, you think Marte is a liability to the Pirates is something else.<\/p>\n<p>Marte is making just $7.5m this season, and is 51<sup>st<\/sup> in baseball in fWAR, putting him immediately ahead of guys like Milwaukee\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yelicch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christian Yelich<\/a>, Chicago\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bryankr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kris Bryant<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russead02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Addison Russell<\/a>, New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gardnbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brett Gardner<\/a>, Detroit\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/iglesjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jose Iglesias<\/a>, and Los Angeles\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kempma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matt Kemp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Offensively, per Fangraphs, Marte brings an offensive value of 11.6 so far this season, while his defense is just 0.6. Through 78 games, Marte has a 2.3 WAR, which leaves him on pace to put up his highest WAR of his career. On top of that, his 2.3 WAR leaves him third in the majors in that metric for centerfielders.<\/p>\n<p>A liability? Hardly.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from an awful month of June in which he put up a slash line of .183\/.235\/.312, Marte has put up great number since the start of the 2018 season. He\u2019s brought the power (10 homers, .180 ISO, which is his best mark since 2012), and he\u2019s driving in runs (38 on the year). Add in 23 steals, solid defense, and his best wOBA (.339) since 2014, Marte has been one of the best centerfielders in baseball by far.<\/p>\n<p>What makes Dunlap\u2019s comments so maddening online the other day is that so many people in the city of Pittsburgh that are disgusted with the Pirates are just looking for something to grab onto and run with, allowing them to complain about the team endlessly.<\/p>\n<p>Dunlap gave that base of fans just that spark to run with. That\u2019s frustrating, because Dunlap has a platform to use, and he\u2019s just flat-out wrong on Marte. Maybe, just maybe here, guys at the Fan should take the time to dig a little deeper in the vast amount of numbers available in baseball to see that Marte, as well as someone like Taillon, is darn good, and far from a liability to the Pirates.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s quite possible Dunlap meant Marte was a liability to the Pirates due to his suspension last year, meaning that if Marte is caught again, he\u2019s out for 162 games. If that were the case, he\u2019s still way wrong. Not many players have been better than Starling Marte since 2012. He\u2019s vastly underrated by the media in Pittsburgh, and with the Pirates struggling since 2015, he\u2019s not getting the exposure he\u2019s due.<\/p>\n<p>One last thing, Colin.
