{"id":830868,"date":"2018-07-13T18:38:46","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T22:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/?p=830868"},"modified":"2018-07-13T19:18:14","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T23:18:14","slug":"io-shirai-announced-for-2nd-annual-mae-young-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/news\/io-shirai-announced-for-2nd-annual-mae-young-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Io Shirai Announced for 2nd Annual WWE Mae Young Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Annual<em> Mae Young Classic<\/em> is scheduled to take place next month with much hype thanks to the previously announced return of former WWE Divas Champion Kaitlyn.\u00a0 WWE has kept that hype going, announcing four more competitors on its Breaking News tab on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwe.com\/shows\/maeyoungclassic\/article\/io-shirai-kacy-catanzaro-nicole-matthews-jinny-mae-young-classic-2018\">WWE.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of those competitors, Io Shirai, has recently signed with WWE during their recent tour in Japan. An icon much like Shinsuke Nakamura, Shirai has won numerous Championships, including the World of Stardom Championship at World Wonder Ring Stardom. Shirai brings years of experience with her in addition to being recognized as Japan\u2019s Top Female Wrestler from 2015-2017 for <em>Tokyo Sports Newspaper<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWE?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WWE<\/a> has announced that it has signed Io Shirai, one of the most decorated women\u2019s wrestlers in the world, as its newest Superstar. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vlHkV2YG1c\">https:\/\/t.co\/vlHkV2YG1c<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; WWE (@WWE) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWE\/status\/1013093151815462914?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 30, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Other competitors include ring veteran Nicole Matthews and the first PROGRESS female graduate Jinny. Matthews is a Canadian wrestler who fans might know from her work on Shimmer Women Athletes, where she has held both the Shimmer Championship and the Shimmer Tag Team Championship. She has also wrestled current WWE Superstars such as Becky Lynch, Billie Kay, and Asuka.\u00a0 Jinny recently signed a contract with WWE and has worked with the company before then at <em>WrestleMania Axxess<\/em> events. Jinny is currently on NXT and NXTUK.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth competitor, Kacy Catanzaro, was a contestant on the popular TV show <em>American Ninja Warrior<\/em>. She was recruited to the WWE Performance Center earlier in 2018, bringing along her talent and athleticism. Catanzaro also has a background in gymnastics. The <em>Mae Young Classic<\/em> will be her televised in-ring debut for the company.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"First 6 Mae Young Classic competitors revealed: WWE Now\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UnAEhkwoxzQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The inaugural <em>Mae Young Classic<\/em> introduced the WWE Universe to the likes of breakout NXT Superstars such as Bianca Belair, Dakota Kai, and current NXT Women\u2019s Champion Shayna Baszler.\u00a0 The Classic also showcased top independent talents that included Toni Storm and current TNA Superstar Tessa Blanchard. Veterans such as Mercedes Martinez and Serena Deeb rounded out the competitors, while winner Kairi Sane has taken part in various <em>Takeover<\/em> events in addition to competing in the first Women\u2019s <em>Royal Rumble<\/em> in January.<\/p>\n[lawrence-related id=830808]\n<p>Shirai is bound to make an impression on the WWE Universe this year at the <em>Classic<\/em>. Just like the NXT competitors that have competed in the <em>Classic<\/em> before her, Shirai\u2019s participation will put her on the map, setting her en route to bigger things as her WWE career begins to take off.\u00a0 Her international flair continues the trend of WWE acquiring\u00a0great talents from around the world.
