{"id":834432,"date":"2018-08-01T10:19:24","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T14:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/?p=834432"},"modified":"2018-08-01T14:53:10","modified_gmt":"2018-08-01T18:53:10","slug":"pittsburgh-pirates-trade-deadline-fresh-air-pbd11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/news\/pittsburgh-pirates-trade-deadline-fresh-air-pbd11\/","title":{"rendered":"Pirates decision to buy at trade deadline a breath of fresh air"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>For the first time in my 25 years of being a tortured Pittsburgh Pirates fan, the club reversed course at the trade deadline and really bought, bringing in reliever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kelake01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Keone Kela<\/a> from the Texas Rangers for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=hearn-000tay&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Taylor Hearn<\/a> and a player to be named later, while also acquiring starting pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/archech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chris Archer<\/a> from the Tampa Rays for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/meadoau01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Austin Meadows<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/glasnty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tyler Glasnow<\/a>, and a player to be named later.<\/h2>\n<p>Sure, the Pirates bought in recent years, bringing in guys like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/happja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">J.A. Happ<\/a> in 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leede01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Derek Lee<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/ludwiry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ryan Ludwick<\/a> in 2011, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodriwa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wandy Rodriguez<\/a> in 2012 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/byrdma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Marlon Byrd<\/a> in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>But this year, following a hot July that saw the Pirates win 11 straight games, general manager Neal Huntington completely flipped the script, trading for two high-end, proven major league commodities.<\/p>\n<p>By truly buying at the trade deadline, Huntington, owner Bob Nutting, and the rest of the Pirates\u2019 front office has pushed a breath of fresh air through the city of Pittsburgh and the Pirate fan base at just the right time.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does the two moves show the fan base that ownership and this front office is committed to winning, it shows the players on the field as well. That\u2019s the key thing in all of this. Gone are the days in Spring Training where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/freesda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">David Freese<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrijo05.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Josh Harrison<\/a> voiced their displeasure with off-season moves. Returning are the days of true high-level belief from the top down, as evidenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cervefr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Francisco Cervelli<\/a>\u2019s post-game interview.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an exciting time in Pittsburgh, not only for the rest of this season, but the foreseeable future as Kela is under control through 2020, and Archer is signed to a team-friendly deal through 2021.
