Pens Storm Buffalo, Take Down Sabres 5-0\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/6COnb3hDSdMXu\/giphy.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the Sabres being a woefully bad ice hockey team, games against them still count.\u00a0 They may count for less than, say, a comeback win against the Caps, but a win is still a win.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what the Penguins needed last night and a win is what they got.<\/p>\n<p>It had all the makings of being a trap game, too, given how hot the Penguins were coming in and, again, how <a href=\"https:\/\/nhl.nbcsports.com\/2019\/03\/11\/sabres-rebuild-is-still-going-nowhere\/\">woefully bad the Sabres as a team and organization<\/a> are (2-7-1 in their last 10).<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it was everything but that.\u00a0 Buffalo was lifeless and the Pens brutalized their corpse in ways that would probably be illegal in 169 countries.\u00a0 Summed up in a GIF&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">the beautiful game <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tt7eJyPBWo\">pic.twitter.com\/tt7eJyPBWo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; nerd king geoff (@geoffwithano) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/geoffwithano\/status\/1106365370150121473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 15, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>At 5v5, the Penguins allowed just 20 shots (26 in total), with only 5 coming from high danger areas, while 13 came from low danger areas of the ice.\u00a0 What&#8217;s more impressive, though, is that the Penguins allowed just <strong>12<\/strong> scoring chances at 5-on-5 all night (all stats via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalstattrick.com\/game.php?season=20182019&amp;game=21083\">Natural Stat Trick<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At 5v4, the Pens powerplay went 3 for 4 on the night, while the penalty kill shut down both penalties the Penguins took.<\/p>\n<p>And with the Caps and Isles both winning last night and the Jackets and Canes play one another tonight, this was just what the doctor ordered.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>LINEUP<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ready to roll. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LetsGoPens?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LetsGoPens<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fqxc3A8Rna\">pic.twitter.com\/fqxc3A8Rna<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/penguins\/status\/1106323258738122753?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 14, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/2019\/03\/14\/gameday-71-penguins-sabres-p1b1\/\">HCMS made no changes to the lineup<\/a> that came back to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/2019\/03\/13\/recap-70-gone-in-107-seconds-pens-down-caps-5-3-p1b1\/\">beat the Caps on Tuesday night<\/a>, save for Matt Murray&#8217;s Backup getting the nod in goal to give Murr a day off before the long trudge to the postseason starts to set in, while <a href=\"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/2019\/03\/14\/tbt-shades-of-mario-it-was-at-this-exact-moment-we-all-knew-evgeni-malkin-was-going-to-be-a-superstar-in-the-nhl-p1b1\/\">Gene took no nights off and went and got started on his next 1000 points<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>first period<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Whole lot of nothing and dicking around and more nothing as both teams combined for exactly 4 shots on goal in the first 5+ minutes.\u00a0 Bjugstad with the best look, nearly scoring on the Pens first shot of the game.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/gfycat.com\/finishedlinearicelandgull<\/p>\n<p>But the boring as shit opening 20 minutes had the potential to be livened up a bit with 9:13 to play after Pettersson cross-checked Okposo from behind to put the Sabres on the first PP of the night, except it didn&#8217;t because the powerplay was about as useless as the entire city of Buffalo.<\/p>\n<p>What has Buffalo actually given us?\u00a0 Buffalo sauce\/wings, sure, but people were eating chicken wings before Buffalo was established.\u00a0 Some lady just decided to melt butter, mix it with hot sauce and stick a buffalo tag on it.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;d be like naming every hurricane after the city of Chicago because windy conditions happen there too or affixing &#8220;Ottawa&#8221; in front of every bad, incompetent team.<\/p>\n<p>The Ottawa Sabres has a nice ring to it, right?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the Pens had a chance late from the stick of Jared McCann, but Hutton found a way to reel it in.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This pass from Schultz is something else. So silky <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/btgoKfYbQ1\">pic.twitter.com\/btgoKfYbQ1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; nerd king geoff (@geoffwithano) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/geoffwithano\/status\/1106340014340915205?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 14, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><strong>second period<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Early on, Buffalo damn near opened the scoring when the Pens lost track of Conor Sheary in front of DeSmith, but Matt Murray&#8217;s backup made an unconscious save to deny the little guy before <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/G_Off817\/status\/1106346688334032901\">Gudbranson put him on his wallet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/gfycat.com\/unknownunhappygalah<\/p>\n<p>Right after, Casey Nelson went off for interfering with Malkin to put the Pens on their first PP of the night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PIT \u20136:40 \u2013 PPG <\/strong>\u2013 Phil!; A: Crosby, Guentzel <strong>\u2013<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>1-0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And they did not let the opportunity pass them by.\u00a0 Late on in the penalty, Phil! does a remarkable job down low to keep the play alive to get it over to Guentzel in the opposite corner before damn near waiting Hutton out and burying it when Crosby worked it back down to him.<\/p>\n<p>Watch Dom here, though, as Phil! doesn&#8217;t score after waiting out a sprawling Hutton.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of hanging out in the blue paint hoping the puck squirts out to him, he reads the play and sees that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=reNvytfN820\">it&#8217;s never going to come<\/a>.\u00a0 He gets on his horse, hounds the puck and keeps the Sabres from getting a clean clear, throwing it back down low to Money Bag in the end.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/gfycat.com\/wholecourteousandeancat<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s where the magic happens.\u00a0 Bake and Crosby go from low to high, get the Sabres moving, and set up MP28 to feed Phil!.\u00a0 As soon as Phil! picks up the puck, the Sabres are toast.<\/p>\n<p>Phil! sells shot, freezing all 3 Sabres on his side of the ice.\u00a0 They allow a 2v1 to be created down low with Crosby and Guentzel, which is a recipe for disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Crosby and Guentzel combine, the Sabres can&#8217;t adapt, and Phil! buries his 3rd in his last 5.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/gfycat.com\/obviouspertinentcoqui<\/p>\n<p>Sid&#8217;s ability to just hold on to the puck for that extra split second to wait for the passing lane to open is unmatched by anyone to ever play the game.\u00a0 This is scientifically accurate and has been peer reviewed.\u00a0 The world is talking about it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Floodgates are opening for Kessel now. needed was enough space to fit a puck through and Horny was there to cash in when it came to him.\u00a0 Bing bang boom.\u00a0 Buckets.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/gfycat.com\/shallowaggravatingbangeltiger<\/p>\n<h4><strong>third period<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Sabres came out swinging a bit in the third, controlling the 5v5 shot attempts for about the first 10 minutes or so.<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn&#8217;t last longer than that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PIT \u201310:07 <\/strong>\u2013 Bjugstad; A: N\/A <strong>\u2013<\/strong> <strong>4-0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because from the midway point of the period, Buffalo ended up on the business end of the Pens closing the game out and tough titties for them that it included Bjugstad burying a 4th by Hutton.<\/p>\n<p>Big slapper dump in from the neutral zone that Simon won the race to, sealed the wall off, and got a fortunate bounce over the pinching d-man&#8217;s stick right as Bjugstad hopped over the boards.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Hornqvist asking for permission to snipe and you know the big Swede was all about obliging him.\u00a0 Goal doesn&#8217;t happen though without the play Simon made in the corner.\u00a0 Oh boy.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/gfycat.com\/metallicimpartialcow<\/p>\n<p><strong>PIT \u201318:02 &#8211; PPG <\/strong>\u2013 Guentzel; A: Trotman, Bjugstad <strong>\u2013<\/strong> <strong>5-0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To add insult to injury, with Dahlin in the box for slashing Phil! has 3 in his last 5 and 2G-2A in his last 2 games.\u00a0 On yet another point per game pace.\u00a0 Not a big deal.<\/li>\n<li>Really nice games out of Schultz, Blueger, and Bjugstad too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/G_Off817\/status\/1106274617407270913\">Pens get their last back-to-back<\/a> of the year out of the way this weekend when the Blues and Flyers come to town before hitting the road for a 4 game road trip to Carolina, Nashville, Dallas, and MSG.\u00a0 They could basically <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/G_Off817\/status\/1106335941935943681\">end the Flyers season on Sunday night, too<\/a>.\u00a0 Do it.\u00a0 Go Pens<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Count it.
