haven&#8217;t seen one another since December.\u00a0 What we said in those games:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/2018\/10\/31\/recap-10-hey-john-whats-your-name-again-p1b1\/\">10\/30\/18 &#8211; NYI &#8211; 6-3 &#8211; PIT<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/2018\/12\/08\/gameday-28-streaking-p1b1\/\">12\/6\/18 &#8211; PIT &#8211; 6-2 &#8211; NYI<\/a><br \/>\n<a (SO)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One thing you&#8217;ll notice about those scores is that the Penguins, who averaged 3.30 total goals per game this season (6th most), managed to score more than 3 goals just once this season against the Islanders, which will be one of the biggest thing to keep an eye on as this series progresses.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side, only 9 teams scored fewer goals per game this season than the Islanders and their 2.72, while the Pens 2.90 goals against per game ranks them right in the middle of the pack (14th).<\/p>\n<p>But what this all boils down to is this: the Penguins can score goals with the best of them, but no team in the league gave up fewer goals than the Isles 2.33 per game at all strengths.<\/p>\n<p>Unstoppable force, meet immovable object.<\/p>\n<p>With that, let&#8217;s take a look at what they did to get there this season and how they stack up against one another.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>five-on-five<\/h4>\n<p>When looking at the 5v5 data, this trend of the Penguins generating a ton and the Islanders suppressing a ton becomes really noticeable.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the shot attempt and unblocked shot attempt rates the two teams generated and allowed this 917px) 100vw, 917px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What you have here is a team that generates the 9th most shot attempts (58.36) and 10th most unblocked attempts (59.00) per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play (the Penguins) having to go head-to-head with the team that allowed the 15th fewest shot attempts (57.57) and 11th fewest unblocked shot attempts (41.47) per hour of 5v5 play.<\/p>\n<p>Along those same lines, when looking at the shots on goal both teams created and allowed, we can see that the Penguins were the more high-event team.\u00a0 Per hour of 5v5 play, the Penguins generated 32.73 shots on goal per 60 minutes (5th most) and allowed 32.31 per hour of 5v5 play (7th most).\u00a0 The Islanders were the antithesis, creating the 4th fewest shots on goal per hour (28.10) and allowed the 9th fewest shots on goal (29.83).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/sog.png\"><img alt=\"Know Your Enemy Part 1: How The Penguins and Islanders 912px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, we don&#8217;t see this same thing when looking at scoring chances and high danger scoring chances.<\/p>\n<p><a 912px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, as you can see, the Penguins reign supreme here.\u00a0 Per hour of 5v5 play, the Penguins create 27.86 scoring chances, 9th most in the league, while the Isles allowed 27.25 scoring chances against, also 9th most in the league.\u00a0 Over the course of the season, the Islanders actually created just over 1 fewer scoring chance (26.58 &#8211; 14th most), but will be have to deal with the Penguins ability to suppress scoring chances at the 13th best rate of 25.64 per hour.<\/p>\n<p>We see this, too, when looking at the high danger scoring chance data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/hdc.png\"><img alt=\"Know Your Enemy Part 1: How The Penguins and Islanders Stack Up\" 874px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, the Penguins 12.26 high danger chances created per 60 minutes was the 4th most this season and their 10.59 against per hour was 14th best.\u00a0 The Isles, as you can see, came in right on top of the Pens in terms of HD chances allowed with 10.79, while they weren&#8217;t far off with their 7th best HD scoring chance creation of 11.94.<\/p>\n<p>And while there are certainly similarities there in the high danger chances, the quality wasn&#8217;t quite the same.\u00a0 For that, we head to <a href=\"http:\/\/moneypuck.com\/about.htm\">Money Puck&#8217;s Expected Goals Model<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_893883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-893883\" style=\"width: 742px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/xg-mp.png\"><img alt=\"Know Your Enemy Part 1: How The Penguins and Islanders Stack Up\" decoding=\"async\" two teams are.\u00a0 The Penguins teeter between &#8220;Good&#8221; and &#8220;Fun&#8221; with their 2.59 expected goals for per hour of 5v5 play and 2.39 expected goals against per hour.<\/p>\n<p>The Islanders, on the other hand, are very much a &#8220;Boring&#8221; team, which we have gathered from their propensity for being a very low-event team.\u00a0 Their 2.36 expected goals for and 2.3 expected goals against put them among the lowest in the league this season.<\/p>\n<p>On a per game level, that shows up too as the Penguins mustered 2.14 expected goals for and 1.98 expected goals against this season per game at 5v5, while the Islanders hug that &#8220;Boring&#8221; title with 1.95 for and 1.89 against.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/xg.png\"><img alt=\"Know Your Enemy Part 1: How The Penguins and Islanders Stack Up\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-893895\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/xg.png?w=922\" alt=\"\" width=\"922\" height=\"1024\" Islanders didn&#8217;t venture too far away from that even 50% split of expected goals throughout the course of the season.\u00a0 For the Penguins, outside of the few ebbs and flows where they were bad at the beginning of the year and we also pretty ordinary in January to February, they have firmly owned an obscene share of the 5v5 expected goals, particularly as the season approached its conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>This bodes well for them if they&#8217;re able to capitalize on these looks.<\/p>\n<p>But for as good and nice as the expected goal outcomes are, what about the actual goal outcomes?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/goals-1.png\"><img alt=\"Know Your Enemy Part 1: How The Penguins and Islanders Stack Up\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-893896\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/goals-1.png?w=917\" alt=\"\" width=\"917\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/goals-1.png 1134w, https:\/\/thesportsdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/goals-1-497x555.png 497w, 917px) 100vw, 917px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Naturally, you&#8217;d expect to see the Penguins towards the top and that&#8217;s right where you do find them.\u00a0 At 5v5, they possessed the 9th best goals for rate per hour at 2.71 and 9th raw goals for at 182.\u00a0 They also allowed the 8th fewest goals against (150) and 6th fewest goals against per hour at 2.23.<\/p>\n<p>But the Islanders, man.\u00a0 Just as no team gave up fewer goals at all strengths than the Islanders, no team gave up fewer 5v5 goals than the Islanders and Bruins (127).\u00a0 But, per hour, that comes out to a league-best 1.89.\u00a0 As you&#8217;d imagine, though, they only scored 2.41 goals per 60 minutes of 5v5 play, which is the 13th fewest in the league.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s interesting to note is that the Islanders, unsurprisingly, led the league in PDO (1.022) with a 5-on-5 save percentage of 93.66 and the 8th best shooting percentage of 8.57, but rarely this season did they get that elite level goaltending\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong> all of the goals at the same time.\u00a0 Also worth noting that the Penguins 93.09 5v5 save percentage was 4th best in the league, but we&#8217;ll talk about the goaltenders tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>So what does this mean in terms of controlling the events that occur while these team teams are on the ice?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/shares-2.png\"><img alt=\"Know Your Enemy Part 1: How The Penguins and Islanders Stack Up\" decoding=\"async\" goals, the Penguins are a much better possession team across every category we looked at here.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s going to be a slog of a series, but if the Penguins can generate like they have all season and finish the possibly limited chances they&#8217;re allowed to create at 5-on-5, we can be looking at avoiding a 2010 Jaroslav Halak or 2013 Eastern Conference Final scenario.<\/p>\n<h4>Special Teams<\/h4>\n<p>With all of that in mind, this series may still come down to which special teams units do the business at the right time of the year.\u00a0 Because even if the Penguins run into a similar situation like Barry Trotz put them in last year when he was managing the Capitals, or Robin Lehner does do the Halak or the Penguins get Bruinsed, they may just need to find breakthroughs on the powerplay.<\/p>\n<p>Because for as good as the Islanders are at suppressing at 5-on-5, their PK is anything but that.<\/p>\n<p>For a quick viz of this, we look at Wave Intel&#8217;s Versus Tool.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_893884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-893884\" style=\"width: 669px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.usatodaysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2019\/04\/dashboard-1-12.png\"><img alt=\"Know Your Enemy Part 1: How The Penguins and Islanders Stack Up\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">via Wave Intel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Penguins finished the regular season with the 5th best powerplay conversion rate of 24.6%.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve gone through stretches, especially recently, where they&#8217;ve been anything but deadly.\u00a0 In fact, over the last 3 weeks, the powerplay has scored just 4 goals on 30 chances (13.3% &#8211; 27th).\u00a0 Part of that can be chalked up to the omissions of Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin from the lineup.<\/p>\n<p>That 13.3% is only slightly worse than the Islanders conversion rate for the season, which found itself 29th with a 14.5% rate.\u00a0 As you can see above, they generate a higher end amount of scoring chances, but they just don&#8217;t shoot the puck.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, you can say that neither penalty kill has been particularly good this year, either.\u00a0 The Penguins finished the season killing off penalties 79.7% of the time (19th), while the Islanders killed off the 18th best 79.9%.\u00a0 What&#8217;s interesting, though, is that the Penguins don&#8217;t really give up a lot on the kill.\u00a0 In terms of both sets of scoring chances against, you can see that they find themselves near the top of both.<\/p>\n<p>But the Islanders, well, they give up\u00a0<strong>a lot<\/strong> of shot attempts and scoring chances.\u00a0 And against a powerplay unit that possesses Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel, Kris Letang, and Patric Hornqvst\/Jake Guentzel, the lethal nature of that PP unit could prove to be the Islanders undoing over the course of the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Given what both of these two teams are good at, we could be in store for 4-7 games of 2-1 results.\u00a0 At this time of the year, sometimes luck prevails above all else, but with the players the Penguins have and their scoring ability, it should be enough to pick the Islanders apart even in the face of Robin Lehner rising to the occasion to steal a game or
