The postseason of college football is changing, but we know not the direction of that change. Offseason talk has mentioned both a plus one format and a four-team playoff to help more fairly determine which teams should have the right to play in the national championship game. Luckily for we the college football fans, the people in charge of determining the path the postseason will take are people unafraid of change, not influenced by money or benefits, and want the best for the players and the sport.
Given that these leaders of postseason reform have such a passion for doing what’s right for the sport, they know what is and isn’t a competent and improved plan. Their insight and understanding of….hold on, no, wait. None of that is correct. This is one of the four options under discussion:
4. Four Teams Plus. The four highest-ranked teams meet in two games except that the Big Ten and Pac-12 champions will always play in the Rose Bowl. If the Big Ten champion, the Pac12 champion, or both are in the top four, that team (or those two teams) would play in the Rose Bowl and the other two games would be filled by the other four highest-ranked teams. Select two teams for the championship game after those three games have been played.
To clarify what that means, the precious Rose Bowl tradition that no one other than old white men in the Midwest and Pasadena gives a shit about gets preserved, and we play three games in which, presumably, two of those winners will be selected to go to the national championship game. In other words, THE EXACT SAME THING WE ALREADY HAVE. Three teams (or more) in the running for two spots, voting and computer business to select the top two teams, and at least one team having an argument that they were unjustly left out of the championship game.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? ALL THEY DID WAS CLEAN UP THE VOMIT IN THE WAFFLE HOUSE BATHROOM AND TELL EVERYONE IT’S NOW AN O’CHARLEY’S. The only option without a full load of bullshit is the four-team playoff. Literally all these people have to do is figure out a way to not screw up the four-team selection process and everyone will say they’ve done a pretty good job.
NO ONE IS EXPECTING THE MOST PERFECT SYSTEM EVER. Just do something that’s better than what we have and we’ll eat it up with a spoon.
But given with what we’re working with here, I fully expect something even worse that the Rose Bowl protection plan to become the new postseason system. So we should all look forward to Ohio State playing USC every January, while the other postseason games are played on floats during the Rose Bowl parade.
