Former Giant and NFL expert Phil Simms thinks the Giants are a team in transition.

In an article written by the Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer,  Simms said,  “Last season, they were still in that window to win two or three Super Bowls.”   “They’re now a team in transition, and we’ll see how it goes.”  

In my humble opinion,  Phil Simms is the best color analyst in the business.  Although most of his work involves covering the AFC, he has a pulse on the Giants.  His analysis of the current state of the Giants is spot on.   Do we have a team which can still win a championship? Or do we have a team which is on a downward spiral?  Even though  I am an ardent Giants fan,  this team under the leadership of  head coach Tom Coughlin has bottomed out.  Unless something out of the ordinary happens this year, the Giants will not make it to the Super Bowl.  The window for Coughlin’s Giants closed two years ago.  In 2008, the Giants had their best chance of repeating as Super Bowl champions. After going 11-1, the Giants stumbled down the stretch and were beaten by the arch rival  Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC Divisonal playoff game.  This bitter loss to the Eagles left a sour taste in my mouth.  Everything was aligned for the Giants to repeat.  Recall, they had the number one seed.  And if they would have beaten the Eagles, the NFC Championship would have been played at home against the Cardinals.  Playing the Cardinals at home would have been a daunting task and a winnable game for the Giants. In 2008,  the Cardinals were an impressive 6-2 at home and had a dismal 3-5 record on the road.   Instead of having four Lombardi trophies displayed at Giants headquarters, we have only three.   Last year was a  complete nightmare. Especially the last two games of the season  which brought back dreadful memories of the pathetic seventies.  There were too many games which were non-competitive.   My somber outlook on this team could be wrong.  And I am hoping this is the case.  On the other hand,  2010 brings a lot of optimism.  The Giants open their new stadium and have new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell.  Additionally, through free agency and the draft, the Giants have new faces.  Let us hope all of this factors into positive results.  And  as Simms said, “We’ll see how it goes.”
