New Giants’ defensive coordinator Perry Fewell has changed his mind.
Back in April, on ESPN’s Mark Mosley’s blog, there was speculation Fewell was going to implement a version of the Tampa 2 scheme.
Apparently, Fewell will not be using the Tampa 2 defense.

Wondering what kind of defense new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell plans to run with the Giants? Well, apparently it won’t be the “Tampa 2” that most people expected. In fact, according to safeties coach Dave Merritt, whatever you want to call the new Giants’ defensive scheme, it won’t be anything like a “Tampa 2”.
“I would label Coach Fewell as a multiple front, multiple-multiple coverage defensive coordinator,” Merritt said, putting heavy emphasis on the word multiple. “I mean, he is the furthest from a Tampa 2 guy. And to be honest with you, because of what he did in Chicago and being up (in Buffalo) under Coach Jauron, I thought he was going to be a Tampa 2 guy. But that’s the last thing you’re going to see us out there playing, is the Tampa 2, because that’s not what he is.”
As Pete points out in today’s post, an area of concern of the Tampa 2 is giving up a lot of rushing yards. When Fewell was the defensive coordinator of Buffalo last year, the Bills gave up huge chunks of rushing yards. From the Mosley post: Last year, Tampa Bay was the only team that was gashed for more yards per rushing attempt than the Fewell-led Bills defense.
Perhaps, after careful consideration, Fewell will use a scheme which plays to the strengths of the Giants defense.
