Defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka will remain a Giant. This preemptive strike by the Giants takes the wind out of Osi’s sails. Under contract for two more years, the disgruntled Umenyiora has lost leverage. As Andy pointed out yesterday, If I am the Giants and Osi holds out, I re-sign Kiwi and move on. I love Osi, but the Giants don’t have time for hold outs. Between Tuck, Pierre-Paul and Kiwanuka, the team was planning to release a DE anyway. So be careful what you wish for Osi, you just might be held out.
Let us hope, Osi shows up to camp tomorrow. Because Giants owner John Mara expects him to be there.
Speaking of other news, David Diehl is going to be a starting left guard. Does this move indicate the Giants will sign a left tackle in the near future? Is Beatty ready to start? Based on what we have seen, Beatty has not shown he is a starting left tackle in the NFL. Remember, the Giants passed on offensive linemen in April’s draft. Anthony Castonzo was sitting there at 19. But the Giants decided to select Prince Amukamara.
Because of mercurial Matt Dodge, the Giants are having discussions with former Giants punter Brad Maynard.
Madison Hedgecock has been released. So will the Giants go after Texans free agent Vonta Leach? He wants to come to New York. Without a doubt, he would be a fantastic fit. However, this may be an unlikely signing. Leach wants big bucks. A salary greater than Eagles fullback Leonard Weaver. Weaver signed a 3 year 11 million dollar contract with 6.5 million guaranteed.
By Friday, we will know the fates of Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, and Steve Smith. And will the Giants sign a linebacker? Tampa Bay Buc Barrett Ruud is available. Again, he very well could be outside of the Giants price range. Anyway, the Giants have to upgrade the linebacker unit. Signing a middle linebacker and moving Goff to the strong side would make sense to me. This would force Clint Sintim to battle for a roster spot.
Thus far, the Giants are making wholesale changes to their roster. These roster changes implicates the players not the coaches who are being held responsible for last seasons demise.
