Rookie Prince Amukamara, the Giants first round selection, is OUT INDEFINETLY. During practice Saturday evening, Amukamara broke a bone in his foot. Prince was supposed to challenge the oft- injured Aaron Ross for the third corner back spot. This is disconcerting news. Because earlier this week, reserve defensive back Bruce Johnson ruptured his Achilles tendon. Nonetheless, Johnson is done for the year. As far as Amukarama, he may miss the first half of the 2011 season. Now all of a sudden, as a result of these two serious injuries, the Giants are short-handed in the defensive backfield.
Speaking of short handed, the tight end position looks bleak. On Thursday, former starter Kevin Boss signed with the Raiders. On Saturday, newly acquired Ben Patrick opted for early retirement. This leaves the Giants with a major problem. They do not have a starting tight end on their roster. Travis Beckum, Jake Ballard, and Christian Hopkins are the other tight ends on the roster. At this moment, the depleted tight end depth is starting to look like the void at safety two years ago. What are the Giants going to do? Moving Bear Pascoe from blocking fullback to tight end would provide immediate relief. Whether the Giants make a trade ( shipping Osi to Seattle for TE John Carlson and a draft pick?) or pick up a waived veteran, Reese has to get a bona fide starter at this position. In the meantime, the Giants could use Brandon Jacobs and D.J. Ware as fullbacks. Having Jacobs and Bradshaw or Ware and Bradshaw in the game at the same time, would give defenses something to think about. Nevermind. Creativity is not in Gilbrown’s vocabulary.
