Perry Fewell has been let go as the Defensive Coordinator of the NY Giants.
The emperor has no clothes and the Giants (Mara/Reese/Coughlin) saw no clothes. Every commenter uniformly agreed that it was time for the Giants to move on from Fewell. We were resigned to a reality this past week where Fewell would stay on; we are grateful that the franchise is moving forward and moving on.
There are more capable DCs out there. Fewell was not a bad coordinator. He just wasn’t that great. His Tampa 2 zone would resurface from time to time. A classic example occurred Week 1 vs Detroit when Golden Tate went past Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and was passed off to the Safety. Except the Safety never showed up and Tate was open with no defender within literally 20 yards of him. That is a double whammy of a receiver sitting down in zone AND miscommunication on assignments. Fewell was weak on adjustments. His defense got shredded time and again by the read option, something the entire league got the memo on except the Gmen. And his defense typically feasted on poor QBs while enduring famine versus the good ones. Consider that the Giants beat the following QBs:
Matt Ryan, RGIII, Cousins, Hill, Mettenberger, and Fitzpatrick.
Consider that they lost to the following QBs:
Wilson, Kaepernick, Romo (2), Foles, Sanchez, Stanton, Luck, Stafford, and Bortles.
Enough of the past, onto the future. And it all of a sudden gets a little brighter, knowing that the Giants can hire some pretty good coordinators. Three that come to mind are Steve Spagnuolo, Jim Schwartz and Rex Ryan. Yes, Ryan wants to be a head coach. But all would be upgrades. Word is that Spagnuolo is of interest to the Giants and that Spagnuolo also had inferred he is interested as well. Spagnuolo reclaimed Corey Webster and jump-started the 3rd year’s career. Similarly, we think that Spags can jump-start Damontre Moore’s career in this, his (upcoming) 3rd year. Moore has been a fairly solid pass rusher in limited snaps, so the new coordinator can tap that potential. If Beason can get healthy, his on-field presnap reads can assist a player like Moore on run vs pass, leveraging the pass rusher’s skills so that he can be more aggressive.
in other news, Tom Quinn is also being evaluated and his status with the Giants for 2015 has not yet been set. Paul Schwartz of the NY Post reports that he is likely coming back.
