Giants take Ereck Flowers in Round 1

If the Giants were not going to trade down, they took the best guy still on our board, Ereck Flowers.  So we like the pick.  This is our predraft comment on Flowers:

Ereck Flowers (2) POTENTIAL.  Not 9 overall. Needs more NFL strength but has huge upside. Giants cannot be faulted for taking him at 9, given the weakness of the Draft overall. Huge, can be great run force and great pass protector, given time to develop.  Good feet. Good hands. Play him at RT and eventually become a LT. Worst thing that happens is that he is a dominant Guard like Ben Grubbs. His value is in the High teens- Low 20’s because you are still drafting off of potential. But I like him more than most.

Wonder explains that Flowers needs a year to be able to play at a high level in the NFL.  So do not expect him to be great from Day 1.  But in a little bit of time Flowers is going to be a very good pro, a 10 year starter.  It’s all about his footwork getting coached up.  His massive body and run game will take care of the rest.

Flowers was ranked 6th overall by this NY Giants blog.  But there was a talent dropoff after the 2WRs, 2 QBs, and Williams.  So the Giants got a very good player with a lot of upside but we do not have the certainty that a 6th overall pick would normally imply.  This is because he’s a mid first rounder in value.  If his footwork were more certain earlier, he would be easier to equate to 6th overall.  Just coach him up!  And let that massive amount of physical skill take over.

Marc Ross, Director of Player Personnel, echoed our Draft analyst’s views on Flowers.  According to Jordan Raanan’s tweet, Ross brushed off critique of his technique being flawed.  “They all have technique flaws,” said Ross.  And Ross went on to explain that Flowers’ potential is through the roof, with him having the upside of a franchise LT. The Giants drafted him because they believe he will be the next Franchise LT. This is precisely what Wonder has described: “POTENTIAL.”

Summary: We knew we were dreaming that Reese would trade down.  He did not.. no surprise to us.  So he did the next best thing and took the guy we would have selected, Ereck Flowers.  Ross and our draft analyst see eye to eye, that Flowers will be taught technique and translate his tremendous skills into being a special OLineman. I am thrilled that the tail end of Eli Manning’s career is being protected and leveraged.  If you want the ball to get to Beckham, you need an OL.
