Not every boxer gets to live the storybook ending where they defeat the reigning champion and hold up a title belt in front of their adoring fans. In fact, for most boxers, their career is full of hard knocks and disappointment. Whether it’s due to injury, a failure to catch their big break, or just pitfalls of competition, many hyped young boxers fail to reach their potential.
888sport.com has detailed millenium boxers betting odds and recounted some of the most overhyped boxers of recent years.
Topping the list is Andre Ward. Ward had incredible success in the ring, holding three belts at one time. At the age of thirty-three, Ward decided to retire with a 32-0 record. The fact that he bowed out early on his undefeated record and never made an attempt to take on the heavyweight division will keep him from being known as one of the all-time greats.
Another overhyped boxer is Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Alvarez has a phenomenal record in the ring at 50-1-2, but his critics point out that he has never really had his signature “big” win. Some of his most important victories like his 2018 win over Gennady Golovkin were sullied by the fact that the match ended in a decision instead of a decisive knockout. Without that one signature win to pin his career on, Alvarez is in jeopardy of having his career be forgotten.
Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. has had to overcome the shadow of his father for his entire career. Due to his famous familial connection, Chavez Jr. has struggled to make a name for himself in the boxing world. In addition, his family ties have kept him training with his uncles, who many think do not have Chavez Jr.’s best interests at heart. It’s a difficult situation as Chavez Jr. is a talented fighter, but his father’s legacy and his family may keep him from reaching his full potential.
Lastly, Tyson Fury may be one of the few many to hold the heavyweight title who could be considered overrated. However, his victory over Klitschko to obtain the belt was lackluster and more due to his opponents advanced age than a statement of Fury’s in-ring dominance. Only time will tell if Fury can live up to the pressures of being the champion and carve out a notable career for himself.
