2015 NFL Draft Part 3: Defensive Secondary

Rating Scale 1-7. 1 Consistent All Pro. 2 Pro Bowl. 3 Solid Starter. 4 Replaceable starter.

For these players, the ones who interest us most are Shaq Thompson and Eric Rowe.

Cornerback

Trae Waynes (3) Not sure he can hold up. Has good coverage skills.  Overrated.  Maybe I take him 25-32. Played w very good players around him, and that covered up some weakness.

Byron Jones (3) Most potential of CBs.  Most upside.  Shoulder injury.  4.4 and broad jump.  Team Captain. 6’1″ 200 lb. NFL CB body.  He will not get past 32 if still there because a NE kinda guy.  Value 17-24.  Doesn’t have unbelievable ball skills else Top 10.  Football Player.  Good solid pro.  If develops ball skills, will be a (2).  Ahead of Waynes.

Jalen Collins (3) Medical Problem. Stress Fracture. Foot problems more of a concern for CB.  No workout, recovered in time? Built like Safety, covers like Corner. But medical scares me. Need team doc to review and provide input before I draft him…  A lot of potential if given green light.

Marcus Peters (3) Good CB, but thrown off team. Interview him, if given green light, take him early R3 because of off-field issues.

Kevin Johnson (3) Projected by many as R1, but not us. Needs to put on weight. Doesn’t run fast. Still too small.Wait until R2. Steal in R3.

PJ Williams (3) Will be overdrafted. NFL body in theory. DUI, off field issues. Not that fast. R3. He has upside. He knows what is going on on the football field.

Eric Rowe (3) Can play some Safety too.  Great speed. Hasn’t shown great ability. Make him a FS.  Teach him and he will improve cover skills. Has size, speed and strength to play.  Ideally taken in R3.  If guys all gone at 40, trade down to 2nd half of R2, take him late R2.  Not sure where he plays, but he has everything there to be a terrific pro. LOADS OF UPSIDE!  Better than most. Taking him at 40 ok, not terrible. He’s going to make my football team and play there for many years.

Doran Grant (4) R3 value.

Safety

Landon Collins (3) End of R1 value 24-32.  Smart. Good. Not great. Will get overdrafted.  Will be a good pro.  BUT NOT TOP 15 OVERALL.  See previous drafts (i.e. 2010) where we rated Eric Berry and Earl Thomas both as (1)’s in Top 10 of the Draft.

Shaq Thompson (3) We spent half of an entire blog post discussing this player’s story. He is listed as a LBer.  But make him a Safety.  Has upside to be a (2). Intriguing draft prospect.

James Sample (4)
Jaquiski Tartt (4)
Damarius Randle (4) late R2 or early R3. Best cover Safety in a weak class.
