2016 NFL Draft Part 1

Installment #1.  We will cut right to the chase and dig right in with who the Gmen can take with the 10th pick in the 2016 Draft.

Last year was the very first year where the Giants took exactly who our Draft analyst wanted them to take- Ereck Flowers.  Obviously a lot will happen between now and then.  And there is still a lot of Combine film for our analyst, Wonder, to review.  But let’s get to it with what is ahead in Round 1.

The way this is going to unfold, there are obviously players who will not be there and there will be players who are there who Wonder likes for the Gmen at 10.  Here is his list of 6 players who he will be very happy with if they get any of them (in descending order of preference):

  1. CB Jalen Ramsey.  Duh, of course he will not be there at 10.  But we have to review him nonetheless.  THE WHOLE PACKAGE.  Big. Fast (not super fast). Strong. Cover skills. Can tackle. Great hips. Long arms. Great acceleration and vision. If you want him at Safety, he can gain 10 lbs and play there too–> can be an Eric Berry or Earl Thomas, the QB of your defense.  Very versatile.  Can move down low. HE IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE DRAFT.  In today’s passing league, it is good to have a Safety that can play the whole field.  He can cover Gronk too.
  2. OT Laremy Tunsil.  Yes, another player who will be long gone before the Giants pick.  Mean streak. Has a history of little dings, off field issues.  Big, strong, great feet.  The game appears effortless to him.  Blocking speed guys comes naturally. Hasn’t been tested yet, so potential is sky high. Can get to the second level. Has a little bit of nasty to him. All Pro talent. Does he need to be motivated because the game is coming so easy to him? Other than that, terrific.
  3. DE Shaq Lawson.  Wonder has him higher than most.  Many slot him in teens, but Wonder has no problem with the Giants taking him at 10.  That is rare praise for a draft analyst who is always preaching value.  Lawson should be available at 10.  If he is there, grab him.  He is going to be a great player.  “He did not run as fast in the Combine as I wanted him to, but I am not too concerned because he plays fast on the field, where it counts.”  Great hands. Knack for getting to the QB. Got the best of Ronnie Stanley. Wants the big stage. Wants to be the guy. Has drive. Plays hurt, plays bigger than his size. Can change the attitude of your defense.
  4. DE/DT DeForest Buckner. Big. Fast. He can play inside or outside. He can gain 20 lbs and fill out. Has speed for a big guy.  Super high floor… no way he misses as a Pro. Reminds me of Calais Campbell.
  5. CB Vernon Hargreaves.  Potential All Pro.  Has no weaknesses except size.  Compares to Joe Haden. Can be better than Haden.  Has instincts that are pretty impressive.  Needs to fine tune tackling because of his size. Great timing, reflexes and speed.  Needs to learn about how to handle the Grade A NFL Wide Receiver beef (i.e. the Julio Jones, AJ Greens), but he’ll figure it out and be your Corner for the next 8-10 years.  Can blitz off the corner too because of his size and speed.
  6. OT Ronnie Stanley.  Potential to be an All Pro.  Long arms. Big tough hands. Athleticism. Reminds me of D’Brickashaw Ferguson because of athleticism and length.  Needs to learn how to handle the NFL rushers, i.e. setting himself.  But he’ll be a tackle for years and years to come.  Not the nasty of Tunsil.  But will protect your QB.  You need RT in today’s passing league so this guy can fit right in with Flowers if the others aren’t there.

Okay, I know, there is a player who you like who we have not yet mentioned.  It’s Part 1.  We’ll get to him.  The point here is that one of these six should be there at 10.  We are fairly certain Lawson will be. But if the Giants take any of these, the Giants will be getting someone who Wonder slots as a Pro Bowler who has the potential to be an All Pro.  We left out a lot of players, like Bosa, Elliott, Jack, Floyd and Treadwell. We will review them in the next post.
