2016 NFL Draft Part 4: Wonder’s Sleeper

Some people have Wonder’s sleeper as the 13th rated QB in the NFL Draft.  NFL.com has this QB as the 9th best of a weak class.  But Wonder thinks the Giants can take this QB in Round 2 (or Round 3 if they think he can fall to that spot) if he passes the interview and workout.  Who is this QB?

The QB- Cardale Jones.

The interview: Are you willing to sit behind Eli for a few years? Are you interested in being groomed? Are you willing to work hard to improve your game for 3 years without a single snap?

The Workout: See what Jon Gruden says about his potential.

He is big. 6’5″ 253 lbs.  And he is bigger than that, like Cam Newton, thick, he won’t get hurt.  He can play at 265 lbs.  BIG.  He has a cannon for an arm. Can and will stand in the pocket. He won’t go down when hit, tough to bring down.  Imagine this guy with Flowers, Pugh, Richburg, et al.

His Floor? He busts.  As a Round 2 pick, it does not kill your franchise.

His Ceiling? A combination of Cam Newton and Ben Roethlisberger.

When you see the desperation of the Eagles and the Rams to pay DEARLY for QBs that may not even make it, the value is more apparent. Yes, it’s a QB-driven league. If your franchise has patience it can let a good one develop.

Cardale Jones has more upside than Goff.  For sure, Goff’s floor is higher, but when you consider that the Rams and Eagles have mortgaged their future to take him, that means the Floor is a disaster if that selection does not work out.

Cardale Jones is NOT a project.  Played at Ohio State.  His biggest problem? He probably had no interest in college. He left for the draft rather than play his last year as a backup.

Jones sees the field fine. He lacks a lot of college experience, but has enough experience in terms of being under Urban Meyer for 3 years.  Physical beast. Decision-making on the field is hard to tell.  But from what we’ve seen, he has significant capabilities.

The monetary impact of success is huge also- he won’t blow your cap and his second contract won’t block out the sun.

Wonder thinks this guy is very coachable in terms of improvement.  His technique can be upgraded with solid coaching. For example, most of his overthrows or inaccurate throws are due to poor footwork and not stepping into and finishing his throws.  This is easily remedied.  His throwing motion is classic.  So the talent and potential is there.  Bring him in.  TAKE HIM AT 40 if he passes the interview and workout.

Cardale Jones is a perfect fit for the Giants.  His arm is strong enough for the Meadowlands wind. He gives you a significant home field advantage in the playoffs.  With Eli Manning having another ~3 years, it provides the time to develop him.  With the right QB guru working with him, you can get the best QB coming out of this draft and have the successor to Eli Manning.
