2016 NFL Draft Part 5: Offensive Tackle Etc..

There are two classes of OT.  Tunsil and Stanley are in Group 1.  Conklin, Decker, Spriggs and Ifedi are in Group 2.  So there are 6 really credible players who are candidates for the Giants to play at T for the next 8-10 years.  Of course Tunsil will be long gone.  But the other 5 are possible.  We think that Group 2 are not worthy of 10th overall.  Spriggs and Ifedi make a great deal of sense in Round 2 if they are still on the board.

T Jason Spriggs– Country Strong. Giants should grab him if he somehow falls to them in Round 2. Faster than you would think. Very strong.  Only one thing I do not like about him, not a huge concern, but Indiana played a spread offense- so less pounding.  Athletic, used to be a TE.  Held his own vs Joey Bosa and Shilique Calhoun.  Has to learn how to use his strength vs the power rushers, ie needs better technique for more balance. Big broad jump by a big guy means he has legs for explosion and strength.  Started for 4 years, got better each year, held his own vs the Big Ten competition.  Quick and agile, can move.  Almost as good as Conklin and Decker and much better value.

T Germain Ifedi– Started at Guard, moved to Tackle.  A little slower and less strength than Sprig. 2nd team all SEC. 3 year starter leaving as a Junior. Huge potential, but has to get stronger and more athletic. Young, needs to grow into his own body. Great feet, can shove his arms really well in pass protection. Just needs to be coached up.  Fit for Giants at RT.

G Cody Whitehair– 4 yr player, but not strong, he’ll get bull rushed in the NFL. No thanks. Good intangibles but talent not there for where he is expected to be taken (Round 2).

T Le Raven Clark– Another guy in the spread offense who does not have an NFL body. Too much risk, will get shoved around.  Long, but not strong.

A few other players of interest…

CB William Jackson– Reminds me a little of DRC.  Fast, burner.  Has a lot of value.  Can carry another 10-15 lbs without losing any speed.  If he gets that strength/muscle to match the rest of skills, he can become a very good CB.  Will probably be gone by the time Giants pick in R2 but if he is there, he will be a very good CB in the NFL.

RB Derrick Henry– Showing me a lot more than I originally thought.  I never commented here about him before, but if he slips to Round 2, he is a load, impressed by his lifting/strength. Fast for a guy that size. AND he can catch the ball.  A tank, so he can block too.  For good reason, they don’t like taking RB in Round 1.  So this is the value that presents itself when you can get a potential beast like this in Round 2. That is how you allocate resources in today’s NFL.  Henry, for a guy this big, he has speed.

WR Josh Doctson– Like a Jordan Matthews.  Good speed, crazy broad jump. Needs to fill out his body. Great hands and can control his body to catch the ball.  Can be a good #2 WR on your team.

TE Austin Hooper– Great hands. Always seems to be open (creates separation). Needs to get stronger to make the jump to the pros, but I think he can. If he does that, projects as a solid blocker and has potential to be a great receiver. Round 2 fine. Round 3 would be great value.

S Keanu Neal– I wish he was an inch or two taller. Good (not great) cover skills.  Long arms, physical, and aggressive tackler. Smooth athlete. Does not have that burst of speed though. Great on specials. He will probably go too early, ie Round 2, but Round 3 is interesting.
