Earlier today, it was revealed through the power of sources that Les Koenning was leaving his job as Mississippi State's offensive coordinator for the position of wide receivers coach at Texas. Koenning had been with Dan Mullen at State since Mullen took over in Starkville five years ago.
Koenning's departure will not be terribly lamented by many State fan, but it does, at the very least, break up the familiarity that coaches and players love so much. It also opens the door for RAMPANT SPECULATION, which is the best kind of speculation.
DID MULLEN AND KOENNING NOT GET ALONG? I HEARD MULLEN TOLD HIM WEEKS AGO TO START LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB. IT'S MULLEN'S OFFENSE ANYWAY, KOENNING JUST OFFERED ADVICE. A FRIEND'S NEIGHBOR TOLD MY FRIEND THAT GRUDEN BOUGHT A HOUSE AT OLD WAVERLY.
Whatever the reason for Koenning leaving, Mullen is in need of a new offensive coordinator. And if I know Dan Mullen, and I don't, he'll be looking for someone with a multiple championship pedigree and is familiar with the SEC, which brings us to the perfect candidate.
He's a man who is familiar with Starkville and Mississippi State, and has won various championships for the football program. And most importantly, he's bagged two Egg Bowl Championships.
COME ON HOME, SYLVESTER CROOM.
Look at the impressive list of championships he's won:
-2 Egg Bowl Championships
-1 Liberty Bowl Championship
-1 SEC West 3rd Place Championship
-1 SEC West 4th Place Championship
-1 SEC West 5th Place Championship
-1 Ron Zook Firing Championship
-1 Mike Shula Firing Championship
-1 Ed Orgeron Firing Championship
The blend of his West Coast offense concepts and Mullen's read option scheme could be DEVASTATING for opponents in 2014, especially when operated by Heisman contender Dak Prescott. If you're Dan Mullen, the only choice here is to pick up the phone, make the call, and tell your ring guy to START MAKING THOSE CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS.
