Hey,
Here we are with two weeks until the combine. We will look at some outside linebackers tonight as there is quality and the possibility that we may draft here. We really need the MLB but as I studied this group I began to realize that a few have the size to play the middle. The fact that they played outside in college matters but there are advantages also as the outside requires more speed, more agility and more ability in pass coverage. Here we go.
(1) Sergio Kindle olb Texas 6’4 254lbs.
The more I look at this guy,the more I like him. He has a lot of size as not many in the middle or certainly on the outside carry more and at 6’4 he has the height to cause the offense problems. This guy hits hard, has no off field problems and he is really good. This guy can also play D.E. and he comes from an ecellent defense.
(2)Ricky Sapp OLB Clemson 6’4 246lbs
Ricky led the Clemson defense and is viewed as an excellent player. He is tough, quick,a senior and he too has the size at 6’4 and 246. I don’t think he is round 1 talent but some do. The size is impressive and I know of no personal issues. He has that size so he could play the middle.
The rest are normal sized OLB except for two I consider top 660 picks.
(3) Jerry Hughes OLB TCU
Jerry is a player. He played at TCU which was the best unknown team in the country. He is 6’2 but weighs 256 lbs. I may have missed it but that’s BIG for an OLB which requires some speed and agility but Jerry has the tools and is highly regarded. He comes from an outstanding program and oh,that size.
(4) Navarro Bowman Penn State 6’1′ 228lbs.
Now this is how I see an OLB. Navorro is a very good player from a very good defense and he is quick. He can cover and he gets the outside shut down. He does come with a background as he has been in trouble but he seems to have matured. He is only a jr. as he leaves college so,he may take some patience. He does however have excellent talent and that’s why he’s my #4
(5) Sean Weatherspoon Missouri OLB 6’1′ 235 lbs.
Witherspoon is a top five linebacker with late first, second round skills. He has size at 235 and he had an outstanding career at MO. I don’t think he works for us because he is not special enough for 15 and we have more pressing needs in this draft.
(6) George Selvie SOUTH Florida OLB 6’4″ 247lbs.
I always like to take a shot with a guy I believe will surely help somebody. South Florida has been pumping out some very good players the last few years. This year is no exception. There is a defensive lineman projected in the top 20-25 and I like Selvie. The guy is very tough, has a mean streak,is a good tackler and he may be a steal in rd 2 or 3.
The top 3 guys might work for us and as I said Kindle is a great player. I wouldn’t complain if the Giants took him at 15. Our need is more in the middle but L.T. played outside and he didn’t hurt us.
This week saw some tough news. The Chargers waived their LT and how quickly he went from the best to the waiver wire. Reminds me of Shaun Alexander a few years ago. One year he is MVP in the league only to be washed up a couple of years later. Understandable why players want as much up front as possible. It’s also pretty clear why owners don’t want to give them so much. Brian Westbrook was waived today. Only two years ago he was the franchise, the running game and now he is done. He held out for more money a couple of years ago and as it turned out he was right. Vince Wolfolk of the Patriots was tagged today which pissed him off. He will get 11.5 million which is crazy so,perhaps,he should take a pill. He said he only is accepting this as he was told a long term deal is in the works. Vince is lucky but not too bright. Julius Peppers was waived by the Panthers today which is what he wanted. Peppers has made fantasy money for two years meaning $10-$12 million per annum. He should kiss the ground as he is rich and someone is going to make him richer. I hope the Giants stay away as Julius is NOT a team player and we can’t risk it. If talent was the only issue and the money wasn’t so crazy I would be first in line.
The combine is coming up so things will become more clear. There will be players waived and other happenings as we head into the beginning of the beginning of another year
