If There’s One Word to Describe the Mood of the Ole Miss Football Team, Confident is Not That Word

In addition to making weekly picks against the spread of SEC games, which is a highly lucrative enterprise for me (note:  not lucrative at all), I am also involved in another picks game in which we gain/lose points based on how well a team covers or doesn’t cover.  It’s a game involving drastic swings of point totals and one that eventually led me to ban myself from ever picking a team involved in an ACC game.  The point of me telling you this is that I spend at least 10-15 minutes everyday looking at point spreads and some of the teams that I am considering picking or picking against.

Earlier today, while running through some of the lines, I saw that Ole Miss was a two-point underdog to Louisiana Tech.  In Oxford.  My first reaction was “SURELY YOU JEST, Las Vegas handicapper.  An underdog to a WAC school?”  Then I realized that Las Vegas handicapper had adjusted the lines to compensate for ALL the money being placed on Louisiana Tech.  The I remembered we stink.  And we just fired our head coach.  And Louisiana Tech should have beaten a team much better than us in Mississippi State.  And we really stink.

But what really drove home our underdog status, and an indication that Vegas’ line is way, way too low (Tech to cover, everybody!), was a quote from soon-to-be-non-defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix, said earlier this week about the players’ mindset for the last three games:

“I think they’ll keep competing.  Our goal is to win.  I don’t know if we (will) or not, but we’ll give it everything we can.”

So, if you’re considering a wager for this game, Tyrone Nix strongly hints that you take the Bulldogs to cover.
