Another year of misfortune?
As the Giants prepare for their first preseason game against the Jets, this Giants football team looks like a MASH unit. Currently, according to New York Daily News’ Ralph Vacchiano, the list of injured players continues to grow. Are we going to have a repeat of last season? I hope this is not the case. Right now, the Giants are down to one tight end-Bear Pascoe. But looking on the bright side, our feeble minded offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride does not call many pass plays to a tight end. Therefore, if Bear Pascoe finishes the game unscathed, the Giants are still in good shape. Speaking of the tight end position, the news about Kevin Boss’s injuries is unsettling. After undergoing surgery in May to repair a damaged ankle, apparently while practicing, Boss favored his tender ankle. As a result, Boss injured his hamstring. Another set back for this talented player who is under utilized by Kevin Gilbride. Imagine if Gilbride called Boss’s number more, clearly, he would be one of the top five tight ends in the game. Recently, NFL Network’s Charles Davis ranked his top FIVE tight ends. And guess what? Boss did not even crack the top five. A damn shame!
1. Tony Gonzalez (Falcons)
2. Antonio Gates(Chargers)
3. Jason Witten (Cowboys)
4. Dallas Clark (Colts)
T-5. Vernon Davis(49ers)
T-5. Jermichael Finley(Packers)
Meanwhile, who else is among the walking wounded?
We know tight ends-Boss, Ballard, Beckum and Chandler are out for Monday’s game. Wide receivers Sinorice Moss, Mario Manningham and Tim Brown are injured and will not play. Moss seems to be always injured. If he cannot get on the field, he may not make the 53 man roster. Right now, the 2006 second round pick which by the way former GM Ernie Accorsi moved up to get, is a BUST!
Starting right guard Chris Snee is out with a knee injury. Corey Webster is out with a glute problem. And to make matters worse, Terrell Thomas could miss the Jets game because of a leg injury. Add safety Michael Johnson with a bad back. And wait… Chris Canty was wearing had a Big Wrap on his right leg.
What is so frustrating is we have not played a single game and all of these guys are hurt. Even Erine Accorsi could not swallow training camp injuries. “It’s more nerve-racking to me than the games because if things happen in the game you tend to accept them. But if they happen in training camp it just frustrates you. You live and die with every practice because things do happen.”
Unfortunately, for the Giants, with each practice, another guy gets injured. Let us hope we can stay relatively healthy until the season opener against Carolina.
