Stunning defeat. The Giants played the first of 3 Stooges and promptly dominated to go up 21-0. That was the storyline, a simple example of how a bad Giants team was better than a horrible Jaguars team. It was not a fair fight. Then 2 things happened. (1) The Game entered the 2nd half, a black hole for the Giants this season (2) Geoff Schwartz’s exit in the first half caused a domino effect on the OL. What took place next was 1970’s vintage collapse football. For those of you young enough not to understand what happened in the 70’s, this was it. Bad football. Bad losses. The Giants beating themselves. Flashes of promise followed by epic implosions.
Today’s implosion was epic. No, it was not Pisarcik-esque, but it was pretty damn close. Even as I type I am having a hard time comprehending how the Giants somehow lost this game. I can understand it when Dez Bryant wants the ball and Romo has 7 seconds to throw it behind a pretty good OL and no pass rush from the Giants. I get those losses. The Jaguars were not going to be able to score enough points to make it possible to lose. Enter 2 turnovers, giftwrapping 2 TDs. Said Coughlin after the game: “We could’ve knelt on the ball in the second half and had a better chance to win.” A series of mishaps- A mistake by Fells on a bad block that caused a sack and fumble. A Jennings brain fart for (not covering up the ball with) 2 pts becoming a TD. A Donnell fumble for another Jaguars TD. And somehow on the last possession of the Jags, Blake Bortles becomes John Elway and leads them down the field for a seemingly easy ~43 yard FG for the win. To lose to a 1-10 team after surrenduring a 21 pt lead is nearly impossible. Yet the Gboys found a way.
A year ago we found it insulting to see how Jerry Reese used positive spin to make the 2013 campaign seem infinitely better than the ugliness it was. Embedded in the Giants 7-9 record were 4 consecutive wins vs essentially 3rd string QBs. That kind of deodorant will cover up a lot of stench. You can fool some of the people some of the time. Reese did his best to make it ok, as midway through last year’s season he talked about being only 2 games out of first place due to PHL and DAL s*cking almost as bad. This year he did not have that because DAL and PHL were racking up good seasons. But no worries, here came the 3 stooges to offer some new deodorant, 2014 style. Except the Giants are so bad that they could not close out a 21 point lead vs the bottom-dwelling Jaguars.
If you are bad enough to lose to Jacksonville, you are bad enough to lose to anybody. I still expect the Giants to win the next two vs TEN and WAS. But 5-11 looks likely, because I can’t see past the team beating STL and PHL at the end of the year anymore. Not after what I saw today. Their confidence is worse.. than the Jacksonville Jaguars.
