Tony Romo is gone for 8 games. Kiko Alonso is (not yet confirmed but likely) out for the season. The Giants won’t face Romo in their second matchup. Dez Bryant is out for a while. The Eagles are 0-2 and do not look good (we predicted this in May).
Its deja vu all over again for Tom Coughlin and the Giants. In 2011 the NFC East was a sad sack. The Giants squeaked into the playoffs by getting past 6 weak games and handing the NFL a 9-7 ticket to get stamped for the playoffs. It was the only time in the last 6 years the Gmen got in. But the magic of a healthier Tuck, Osi coming back from injury and Chase Blackburn being brought off the couch all made it come together.
People don’t like it when I say the NFL is soup. But it’s Steve Young himself who says that September is the new preseason. What it means is that if you get into the playoffs and play better when it counts, it does not matter. XLVI’s win is just as sweet as XXI’s. They all add up to 4 Super Bowls.
All I’m saying is that as dysfunctional as the Giants are, a weak division can let them into this race. Of course this team isn’t ready now. I’m not even arguing to have hope. I’m just pointing out that if the Giants stop beating themselves, have Cruz help Eli and Beckham, have the offense help the Defense, have Spags get enough time to get them to come together… that the NY Giants “can” have a shot.
Do the Gmen “deserve” a shot? In 2007 and 2011 many felt no. But the playoffs are a different season. So beat the Skins Thursday night and go forward. It’s not pretty but it means that Tom’s year, the Giants’ year and their fans’ year is not over. Win 1 game. That’s how it starts.
