St. Louis Cardinals
After suffering through his own slow start, Matt Carpenter had a terrific 2018 season that led to career highs in home runs (36), OPS (.897), and ISO (.266). The Cardinals technically don’t need a first baseman, but Carpenter’s versatility could facilitate a major move.
The organization has swung and missed on making big splashes in recent winters. However, their failed pursuits of Jason Heyward, David Price, and Giancarlo Stanton prove they’re willing and able to take on a huge contract. That means Bryce Harper could be on the table, but he would be the exception to the rule when it comes to what the Cards are looking for.
St. Louis is reportedly in the market for a big infield bat. Josh Donaldson could be a short-term option via free agency, but shifting Carpenter back to third to make room for Goldschmidt is another one.
