DRAFT DADDY’S 2011 NFL Draft Board
Did you notice who the #2 LBer on Matt’s board is (after Von Miller)? None other than Martez Wilson.
THE 2011 DRAFT ACCORDING TO ANDY
So how does it shake out tonight for the Giants at #19?
The reader’s digest version is that I think the Giants end up with LT Gabe Carimi. That is not a great outcome. Carimi is simply not value at 19. (Ironically, *Freudian or not, Carimi is the one guy that Wonder left out of his mock, so that is actually where he goes.)
HERE IS THE ORDER OF BEST OUTCOMES TO WORST OUTCOMES:
1) TRADE DOWN
2) WILSON
3) POUNCEY OR CASTONZO
4) HOUSTON
5) OTHER GOOD PLAYERS WHO ARE A REACH AT 19: CARIMI, SOLDER, HARRIS, LESHOURE, COBB, WILKERSON
6) TRADE UP
7) DEFENSIVE LINE
Let’s break this down logically by position to arrive at Carimi…
OL: the Giants want linemen like Castonzo or Pouncey, who I both think will not be there at 19. If they are, they will take one of those two. Carimi and Solder are reaches at 19… TRADE DOWN 5-8 picks if you want one of those two.
LB: At that point when those 2 linemen are gone, they should just trade down to the end of the first Round and take Martez Wilson, the LBer. But that would make too much sense, so they won’t do that. Wilson at 19 is a little bit of a reach, but if they took him it would still be fine. Houston is a 3-4 OLB, but the pick could work. If the Giants take Akeem Ayers that high I will be ill. He’s too slow and he belongs in R2. And if it is a choice between Ayers and Moch in R2, take Moch!
DL: This draft has plenty of good DL that they could take, but I would be disappointed if they went that route (given how they picked a DE in R1 and DT in Round 2 LAST YEAR!) But if somehow a guy like Cameron Jordan, Corey Liuget (or even Wilkerson?) were there and they took one of those, it would not be a ‘bad’ pick. Kerrigan and Reed are not fits for the 4-3. I don’t think DL happens because the Giants simply have too many other needs. Let’s remember that either Kiwanuka or Umenyiora is most likely gone this season, so why would it make sense to add more DL? The answer is that it doesn’t. If there is good DL at 19 (which arguably there will be), it is another reason for the Gmen to TRADE DOWN and let another team pick here.
RB: I was worried they would do something stupid like taking RB Mark Ingram in Round 1, but I think his stock has fallen enough, especially with an arthritic knee possibility, so thankfully that guy won’t be taken by them. (Anyone who takes a RB super high who has a medical issue does not understand the NFL in 2011; it is not a RB league anymore.) If they want a RB that badly, they should TRADE DOWN to the end of R1 and take Mikel Leshoure.
WR: not happening, Jones and Green gone, no one else they would take this high, even tho Steve Smith is a question mark. Not happening, thankfully! Do you like Randall Cobb? TRADE DOWN!
QB: Eli is only 30 years old, not happening, thankfully!
TE: Gilbride hates using TEs dynamically in his offense, so I’d be stunned if they took anyone at this position.
S: they all s**k, so no one is taking a Safety in R1 in the entire NFL. (Someone will be desperate enough to reach and take Moore early R2.)
CB: Jimmy Smith? One of our bloggers thinks this is who the Giants take, but he is a head case, so I doubt it. Amukamara (who we do not like) will actually be long gone thankfully. Brandon Harris is a reach here, another reason to TRADE DOWN.
Summary: LOGICALLY, if the Draft plays out the way I think it should, the Giants SHOULD TRADE DOWN! They could have one of the following EIGHT PLAYERS still there- Wilson, Leshoure, Solder, Carimi, Harris, Cobb, Wilkerson or Houston… But the Giants will not trade down. My gut says that they will stay pat and end up w Carimi.
Carimi is not a bad player! If the Giants ended up with Carimi in Round 1 and LBer Moch in R2, that would still be a good productive draft. But by itself, Carimi is a reach at 19. Trade down, get another later R2 player for your troubles, and then pick one of many good players that still fit for the Giants. Wonder is even more fixated on LBer, specifically Wilson. So he would rather take Wilson at 19 than trade down and not have him there at 29. As crazed as I am for a LBer, I’d rather TRADE DOWN and KNOW I am getting an extra R2 pick, and then STILL GET WILSON!
One last thought about overriding fundamentals of drafting. This draft is a classic example of a plateau of many projected ‘3’s. So trading down from a macro viewpoint makes tremendous sense. AND then add that at 19 there really is not expected to be a need that fits the spot (assuming Castonzo and Pouncey are not there). Even Castonzo and Pouncey are not god’s gift either. If they were available at 19, just look above, it would still be best to TRADE DOWN. As we have shown historically, the right to choose is OVERRATED. So get paid more to trade down than it is worth to pick at your spot. We can identify roughly 8 players would be very acceptable at the end of R1. So whether you trade down 7 spots, or 11 spots etc., you’ll have a good pick there. And you’d be surprised at what the other genius GMs are capable of, shooting wildly over there too, watching others from R2 trade up to R1 to get that marginal QB. Or to watch a 3-4 team take NT Phil Taylor. Trading down makes so much sense. If the Giants traded down to the 33rd pick in the draft right now before the evening started, it would be a great day. And that is because Day 2 would be an embarrassment of riches awaiting us. Even in a weak draft, there are almost as many 3’s awaiting in R2 as there are in the second half of R1.
