A new Eagle has landed in Philly. The under the radar Philadelphia Eagles have nabbed Nnamdi Asomugha. For the past several days, there was much speculation Asomugha was either going to the Jets or Cowboys. But the intrepid Eagles front office put together a successful last minute push to get the most coveted free agent. Give credit to the Eagles. They are not shy about obtaining big name players to improve their club. ie Terrell Owens, Jevon Kearse, and Asante Samuel. Although these big name signings make arresting headlines, they do not engender Super Bowl Championships. To date, a Lombardi trophy continues to be very elusive for the Eagles. Perhaps this year with the acquisition of Asomugha, DRC, and Jason Babin, this may finally put them over the top. Needless to say, in my opinion, the Eagles are the favorite to win the NFC East as well as the NFC representative in this year’s Super Bowl.
With the Eagles obtaining Asomugha and DRC, one has to wonder why the Eagles passed up on Prince Amukamara. Quite frankly, the Eagles are aggressive in the draft and free agency to get their guys. As a Giants fan, with a starved secondary, how come the Eagles did not trade up to get Prince? I asked Pete, one of our experts here at UltimateNYG, the aforementioned question. Here is Pete’s response. Prince Amukamara is overrated. Why do I say that the db is overrated? In a league desperate for quality db’s and teams like the eagles and 18 others drafting in front of Blue this guy was still there. Why would 18 teams pass on him?
Speaking about taking a pass, it seems unlikely, Burress will come home again to New Jersey. Even though the Eagles have revamped their secondary, signing Burress appears to be seductive. On the other hand, like Andy stated, I just don’t see it happening and I do not think it is a good idea to be allocating resources in this direction. There are so many more important positions on the field than WR, and unless Steve Smith’s career is over plus the rest of our WR crop is a dead end plus Nicks and Manningham can’t stay healthy… well, you get the idea. Spend your cap dollars on LBer, OL and RB.
And on Friday, the Giants spent some of their dollars on a punter. Steve Weatherford is a member of the Giants. Unlike last year, Matt Dodge will have to earn a roster spot. This is a good move by the Giants. A competition in camp will determine who makes the team.
