In their fourth and final preseason game, the Giants could not avoid the season ending injury bug. Another Giants player is out for the year. 2009 second round selection Clint Sintim will not be playing in 2011. Last night, Sintim ruptured his right patella tendon.
The second-string linebacker Clint Sintim was carted off in the third quarter after rupturing his right patella tendon. Sintim worked to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee last season. Through tears, he said: “It’s unfortunate. I worked really hard to get back.” Coach Tom Coughlin called the injury, which is season-ending, devastating.
Indeed this is devastating news. Not only does it deplete our weak linebacking corps. After suffering serious knee injuries, unfortunately, he may not play in the NFL again.
In the Giants 18-17 victory, Mike Garafolo comments that Jerrel Jernigan is battling, Da’Rel Scott is fighting for a roster spot, and Tyler Sash shows promise. It is important to remember that on nights like these where the entire 1st string team is benched because of only 3 days in between games (Irene keeps giving us oh so many gifts!), that we can only look to incremental play from individuals who fight for roster spots.
Garafolo is also optimistic about the young group of LBers, one more of which will now get a roster spot with Sintim on IR. Maybe the silver lining around Sintim going down is that the Giants can uncover a potential mainstay in that unit. In terms of growing their own quality LBers, the Giants recent history is so weak that the results can only improve from here. Tracy, Jones, Paysinger, Williams, Herzlich… if one of these guys can emerge in the next few years, it will make a big difference for the defense.
Separately, the he-said-she-said of Steve Smith’s free agency continues. This time it was Smith’s turn.
