I am more than a little pissed. I spent an hour or more writing a piece and when I tried to post it,it said “database error”. The whole thing is gone. It’s late but I will try again.
The Giants got their backup for Eli today and it went well. They signed Jim Sorgi, who backed up Peyton for six years.
David Carr signed with the 49er’s to keep his starting dream alive. David is no longer a starter, but Singletary needed someone to put into a very shaky situation in San Francisco. David gave us two good years and, like Warner, he wanted to start. Sorgi signed a one year deal and I think the Giants got the best man available. There are some things that Sorgi brings that Carr couldn’t give us. Sorgi knows the league and learned from the best there is. He accepts his role and will be a big positive for Eli. He brings a piece of Peyton to N.Y. and although he hardly played in Indy, when he did he played very well. He brings good chemistry to a team that needs it. There was a question about his shoulder but he is throwing well and passed his physical. I like the move. The rumor was Coughlin wanted Mark Brunell in another attempt to resurrect his days in Jacksonville. Sorgi is the best guy available.
Fred Robbins is gone. He has joined “Spags” in St. Louis and I have nothing but praise for the big guy. I wonder what is on “Spags” mind. Robbins played well for us and made some memorable plays. He is aging and more injury prone so it was his time. Salute Fred Robbins. You are a Giant forever. I must add that the move makes me feel even more confident that “Blue” will go high for a defensive lineman. They needed to do it even if Robbins stayed but this move makes it a no brainer. There is depth out there in the draft and if we don’t get McClain and Reese feels Kindle isn’t the answer then Price or another quality guy will be available. There is that 320 lb. guy from Tennessee who, if motivated, is an impact player. His tendency to take a play off now and then is the only rap some have. A big guy in the middle is paramount to a quality defense. He is a space eater and can make a huge difference against the run and on the pass rush. Price is not nearly as big, but he is very active and gets penetration all the time. He is about 295lbs and very agile. I like him.
I do not agree with those who think we should go high for another DB. I believe we have good people and with the addition of Rolle we have a leader and a guy who knows the league, can play safety or corner and is an all pro. I think that Phillips will play. Every time that Rolle does an interview he talks about “me and Kenny.” He should know whether Phillips will play and his comments are telling. Some think that $37 million with $15 million guaranteed is a lot of dough. I think so too but Dansby got $43 million and $20 million guaranteed and Dunta Robinson got big bucks here in Atlanta. I am sure the Giants inquired about Dunta and were outbid. Rolle is a very good player. It is an excellent move. Cromartie is a head case which we don’t need. Rex Ryan has built a reputation of handling guys like that but Tom doesn’t. Cromartie, as talented as he, is was not the answer for us.
A number of people think this is a very deep draft. Jerry Reese has stood out as a master of defining talent. Who ever heard of Kevin Boss before we drafted him? The core of this team was drafted by Reese and he needs to do it again. I believe that the defensive line and next the offensive line need to be addressed this year. Linebacker of course is the #1 priority. There are so many offensive linemen who were no name in college that it is amazing. Look at Green Bay, New England and Indy to name just a few. For every monster from Okla State and Long from Michigan there is someone you never heard of. They are out there but they aren’t in the headlines all the time and play one of the least glorious positions, so we don’t know them. This is where a scout makes his bones. This year some are going at or near the top. There are others. Pouncey is interesting and you all know about the top names but trust me, there are more excellent players and we need some.
